167.0. "Sjfarande Tjrnbo" by NZOV03::PARKINSON (Hrothgar) Fri Nov 28 1986 02:46

Do any of you have any knowledge of the island of Tjrn, in
Gteborg och Bohus, Sweden? Specifically, the area of the parish of
    Stenkyrka?

My interest is that my great-grandfather, Rutger Nilsson, was born
on the farm of Dyreby, parish of Stenkyrka, in 1828. He later became
a sailor, and ended up settling in New Zealand (where I live) in
the early 1860s, when there were very few Scandinavians here.

I have found Tjrn on a map, but that's all I know about it. I would
appreciate any information at all that any of you may have, to flesh
out my picture of just where this branch of my family lived.

    Thanks,
    SLP

I found the note about Tjrn today and have forwarded it to the
people in the Gothenburg office. Gothenburg ( or Gteborg in Swedish)
is the second largest city in Sweden and Tjrn is situated just
north of Gteborg so they should be able to give you a better answear
    than me situated i Stockholm.

It is nice to see that people start using the DEC standard 169 or
ISO Latin Alphabet Nr 1 so that names get spelled with national
    characters as or .

Thankyou very much, Staffan, for your helpfulness. Unfortunately,
I haven't heard from the people in Gothenburg; I guess they're all
busy. But I'll keep hoping for more information.

I am working at the office in Gothenburg .

I myself have a summerhouse on Orust an other island close to Tjrn,
so the first thing I can inform you about is that there is a friendly
    competition between these islands.

In accordance with this my opion is that the only significant
information you need to have about Tjrn is that Orust is the greater
and in all aspects the better Island.

However I can imagine that you might be of an other opinion as you
have your roots through your great-grandfather on Tjrn.

As my wifes father was borned on the Island of Tjrn it might be
possible that I can come back with some more information later on
(even if I still am of the opinion that there is not so much more
    to say about it.)

Should you however like to learn more about Orust there are ofcourse
at lot of information to be given.

    Best regards,

Thanks for your unbiased response! Yes, I would be very interested
in any comments/information you might be able to give me. I recently
met (very briefly) a lady from Tjrn who is paying a visit to New
Zealand; I wish we had had more time to talk.

    Thanks again,
    Shayne
