160.0. "Martin's Goose Day" by TLE::SAVAGE (Neil, @Spit Brook) Mon Nov 03 1986 13:12
Not in reference to our good friend Mr Minow, this day is said to
occur around the 10th or 11th of November in Sweden. Originally
a Roman Catholic festival in honor of Martin of Tours, the day was
later associated with Martin Luther.
It is mainly a tradition of southern Sweden where the day is observed
by eating roast goose after a first course of blood soup, a
highly-spiced "delicacy" that looks rather like chocolate pudding
decorated with slices of stewed apples and prunes.
[Let's hear opinions from any who have sampled this fare.]
This is also a good opportunity to mention spettkaka [cake baked
on a spit]. A thin batter, whose major ingredient is eggs - lots
and lots of 'em!, is dripped on a spit, which is turned until the
batter solidifies into a crisp, light-brown, lace-like meringue.
What finally emerges is a decorative tower that crumbles easily
and makes a fine mess of particles at every mouthful.
