Six Norwegians Killed In Plane Crash
OSLO, Norway (AP) - A single-engine plane crashed on take-off from the
Arctic community of Longyearbyen in the Svalbard achipelago Friday,
killing all six people on board, the NTB news agency said. The
Norwegian news agency said the Cessna 185 had been chartered to fly
five women to Ny-Aalesund, a remote outpost on another part of the
Norwegian archipelago.
All five women and the Norwegian pilot died, the news agency said. The
women were employed by the Store Norske Spitsbergen Kullkompani, which
is mining coal on the Svalbard islands.
Erik Framstad, a government spokesman on Svalbard, said by telephone
the plane crashed 400 to 500 yards beyond the end of the runway. The
cause of the crash was not immediately known.
