Temperance Leader Propose Drinking Zones in Liquor Stores
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - A leading member of the temperance movement in
the town of Varberg says the government should set aside special
drinking zones in Sweden's state-owned liquor stores for heavy
imbibers.
"It is better to let people drink there than in (doorways) and
supermarket entrances," Tage Hansson, chairman of a temperance
organization in southern Sweden, was quoted as saying by the
Aftonbladet newspaper on Thursday.
"The state-owned (liquor store) monopoly must take more responsibility
for its customers and provide better service," Hansson said, citing the
high cost to society of alcohol-related injuries.

| In Norway it is easy, the workers at the "VINMONOPOLET" goes on
strike, like they have been for the last five weeks. The norwegians
have to go to Sweden where they have opened a special shop for them in
the city of Stromstad, and buy what they need. In Norway there is
a state monopoly to sell all alcohol except beer, and therefor it
is not possible to buy any if these shops are closed.

It is, very roughly the same situation as in the US ten years ago.
Cocain is still a Jetset and yuppie drug (Several well known actors
have been implicated and a few have come forth voluntarily when they
attempt to break the addiction) But it is still rumors about "constant
snowfall" on certain Jetset-clubs in Stockholm and Gothenburg.
Crack is viritually non-existant, yet... It seems that a major
marketing drive for both cocain and crack is perpetrated in Europe by
the druggangs and customs finds of cocain has skyrocketed in the last
one or two years.
The major drug of the media is Extacy, since it was discovered in one
or more police razzias against "Warehouse" parties in Gothenburg.
>Is there one [a drug problem in Sweden -TT]?
The answer is twofold:
Yes, and it's on the increase. If the latest proposed increase of the
price of beer and moms (value increase tax) on resaurants comes
through, then a unit, of cocain or crack will be *cheaper* than a beer,
according to some sources?
No, there are no gangs with AK's running around and blasting each other
to pieces on the streets of Stockholm.
>What are the government's views on drug use?
Hmm, don't know really. I don't know if drug use is illegal yet, there
has been talk of an illegalization, but the govenment don't seem very
entusiastic. (I *think* it has been illegalized. Possession of drugs in
amouts larger than personal use would require has been *very* illegal
for a long time)
Obligatory Gripe:
And Sweden is a very free country when it comes to the rights of
junkies, alcoholics etc. They recieve welfare money without any
reassurances that they will try to straightnen their lives out, and
seeing a wino go directly from the welfare office to the liquorstore
with his welfar cheque is not any non- existent occurance.
>What are the peoples views on
>drug use?
A quick survey of the terminal room :-) gives the unanimous view that
drug use beyond alkohol and tobacco (and "snus") is totally deplorable.
There has been almost no calls for any kind of legalizations, except by
the loony right (the Libertarians).
