Politicians Agree on Long-Disputed Bridge
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Danish politicians announced agreement
Friday on a long-disputed plan for the first fixed link between the
European continent and Zealand, Denmark's biggest island and the site
of Copenhagen, the capital.
The Conservative-led minority government and the Social Democrats, who
lead the opposition, agreed on a combined 12-mile tunnel and bridge
link for trains. If approved by Parliament, now in summer recess, the
link would carry traffic between Zealand and Fyn island. Fyn is already
linked by bridges to Denmark's Jutland peninsula, the only part of
Scandinavia geographically attached to the rest of Western Europe. The
project would cost about $1.5 billion.
A rail bridge would be built between Fyn and Sprogoe island, about
halfway across the waters of Denmark's Great Belt. Trains would go the
rest of the way to Zealand though a tunnel.
