99.0. "Suomen strike status" by FURILO::KENT (Peter) Wed May 07 1986 21:21

                             Strike in Finland
                             -----------------

      What is the extent of the strike in Finland? My wife sent some
      Mother's Day cards and they were returned with the stamp "Return
      to Sender Service Temporary [sic] Suspended". My family is
      planning to fly with SAS to Helsinki in June. Is there "normal"
      air service to the country?

    But we in the U.S. could use an update.
99.2Air traffic allmost normalHSK03::PEURAPekka Peura * CSC * HelsinkiSun May 11 1986 14:3618

    The strike of governement employees continues. So no mail to/from
    Finland is going abroad. There are no signs of the strike finishing
    very soon. The main areas affected by the strike are post, railroads,
    governement offices.

    The air traffic is allmost normal. The only limitation is
    that Helsinki airport is open only until 23.00 o'clock and that
    heavy traffic (=DC10's and others with more than 2 engines) goes
    to Turku instead of Helsinki. (this is because there isn't enough
    fire and rescue men working at Helsinki Airport for jets with
    more than 2 engines during the strike. Some international regulations
    state that 2 engines is some limit after which there has to be
    more fire personnel)

    So if you are flying with SAS to Helsinki your flight will arrive
    normally to Helsinki because SAS flies here only with DC9's.

99.4Travel to HelsinkiREX::MINOWMartin Minow, DECtalk EngineeringMon May 12 1986 14:078
But Peter, don't you know that the only civilized way to travel
between Stockholm and Helsinki is by the night boat. Good cheap
food, and all the trimmings. (Passage is free if you have an
Eurail pass, and quite cheap otherwise. Of course, a cabin
costs moderately.)

Martin.

    I've made the trip about 3 times with a car. It is very nice, but
    not the cheapest way to go. The booze is not so very cheap - at
    the time I compared it with prices in Finland and it wasn't a big
    difference. The crossing makes for a good party atmosphere, though.
    Be careful if you drive....the cops sometimes check for booze breath
    as you drive your car off the boat. If you don't book a cabin,
    you can sleep on the floor of the restaurant with the rest of the crowd.
99.6The Strike Is OverHSK03::PEURAPekka Peura * CSC * HelsinkiSun May 18 1986 16:314

    The strike ended at last. Air and train traffic will
    be normal by wednesday. With the post and customs it
    will take much longer before the situation is normal.
99.7Mail for Finland accepted againTLE::SAVAGENeil, @Spit BrookThu May 22 1986 10:1210
Associated Press Wed 21-MAY-1986 20:17                      BRF--Finland Mail

    WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. Postal Service on Wednesday lifted its
    embargo on mail addressed to Finland, effective immeditely. Mail
    returned to senders because of the embargo can be remailed without
    payment of additional postage.

    The embargo went into effect a month ago because of a labor dispute in
    Finland.
