Denmark Orders Libyan Embassy to Cut Staff
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - The Danish government said today it has
ordered the Libyan embassy to reduce its staff from 11 people to six in
keeping with a Common Market decision to impose diplomatic sanctions on
the North African country.
The Foreign Ministry said it was taking the step because of the "Libyan
People's Bureaus' role in the Libyan government's support for
international terrorism." But a ministry source said none of the
employees of the Libyan People's Bureau, or embassy, in Copenhagen was
suspected of terrorism. The source spoke on condition of anonymity.
The ministry said the Libyan embassy would be left with a maximum of
four accredited diplomats and two technical-administrative employees.
It said they would be required to obtain special permission to travel
outside the Copenhagen area.
Denmark said earlier this week that it planned to follow through on a
decision by the Common Market countries Monday to allow no more Libyan
diplomats in their nations than they had in Libya. A Foreign Ministry
source said the reduction and limitations imposed in Copenhagen matched
Danish diplomatic staffing and restrictions in Tripoli, the Libyan
capital.
Denmark said it "disassociated" itself from the U.S. bombing raids on
two Libyan cities April 15, but it voted against a resolution in the
U.N. Security Council this week to condemn the American action.
