85.0. "Strikes - what's the story?" by NONAME::SMITH (Tom Smith) Tue Apr 08 1986 13:29

Does anyone (preferably those of you in the middle of it all) have
any information regarding the strike situation in Norway and Sweden
for the remainder of this month? I have business meetings scheduled
in Oslo and Stockholm from April 14-25, and I would like to know
what effect, if any, the current situation might be expected to
have on travel services (hotels, restaurants, transportation, etc.).

    Thanks,
    Tom Smith

According to todays newspapers in Finland the strike in
Norway shall close 700 hotels and restaurants if it it begins.
I think i heard in the radio today that it really begun but
    I am not absolutely sure.

Yes, I saw it on the AP news wire, thank you. That's why I asked.

    re: .1:

That's what I was afraid of. "No room at the inn" in Oslo.

Any further news on developments in Sweden? Are the same industries
likely to be affected if there is a strike/lockout?

No trouble in Sweden. Agreements for large parts of the Swedish
workforce was reached yesterday and today. There is some parts of
the workforce where agreements are no reached yet, but there is no
    strikes/lockouts pending.

Civil Servants Strike Halts Rail Traffic

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) - Rail traffic ground to a halt throughout the
nation Wednesday when 17,000 railroad workers joined 15,000 civil
servants already on strike over a wage dispute. Contract talks broke
off Tuesday night and Teuvo Kallio, a state mediator, said he found the
situation hopeless since the two sides are still far apart.

About 15,000 state employees working in the capital region walked off
their jobs two weeks ago, shutting down 850 post offices, the Helsinki
airport, state offices and universities. The union representing state
workers wants a 6 percent wage increase, while the state has offered
2.5 percent more money. That offer was accepted last month by major
private sector labor organizations following a two-day walkout.

In the meantime, the government has tried to reopen some facilities.
The Board of Aviation opened Helsinki airport for domestic freight
flights, but all foreign flights were diverted to airports in Tampere
    and Turku.

Customs offices remained unmanned, and cargo was piling up at the
borders. The Board of Railways was trying to resume limited services in
Helsinki where some 100,000 commuters were affected by the strike.

STOCKHOLM, Nov 9 (Reuter) - A strike by technicians grounded
about 3,500 passengers on Wednesday due to fly on Swedish
domestic flights with Scandinavian Airlines Systems (SAS).
An SAS spokeswoman said that as well as seven domestic
routes, the strike had also stopped three lines from Stockholm
to Finnish cities, affecting another 350 passengers.
``Other domestic traffic may also be hit by delays,'' she
    said.
The technicians' union, seeking a new union representation
agreement, plans to remain on strike on Thursday and Friday.
