75.0. "A question about Swedish parishes" by HELIX::MILLER (Don Miller) Mon Mar 24 1986 14:58

In tracking down some of my ancestors who came from Sweden, I have
encountered several "Americanized" names of places in Sweden. Am
I correct in assuming that a name which ends in "-soken" or "-sachen"
or "-socken" is referring to a parish? Is a "parish" the name given
to local government in Sweden? And finally, is it appropriate to
give a place name with the -soken suffix appended (as, say,
Vrigstadtsoken, one of the towns of my ancestors) or would this
be equivalent to saying something like "Maynardtown, Massachusetts?"
Thanks for any input. I am in the third generation born in this
country (the United States) and most if not all of the Swedish heritage
sources in the family are no longer living.

-socken translates as "parish". But this would be part of the
town name as in, say, Belchertown Mass, or Iron City, Michigan.
At home, in Arlingto[w]n, I have a very complete Swedish Atlas
if you're looking for anything specific.

75.2Can I get a titleHELIX::MILLERDon MillerFri Mar 28 1986 11:004
Could you tell me the name of the atlas and publisher? I might
be able to get it through my local library. Thanks.

The atlas is "Sverige Land och Folk", published by Bkfrlaget
Natur och Kultur in 1966.

Vrigstad is in Smland, a part of Savsj kommunblock (county),
located at roughly 5721'N 1428'E. It appears to be a town
of around 1,000 inhabitants (in 1965). As I understand the
atlas, there are several parishes, one of which is Vrigstadsocken.
