Subj: Teaching and choosing Ada
Dear WG9 member,
I have just come back from a conference at the Open University in the UK on
the Choice of Programming Language. I gave a talk advocating Ada (9X).
Some points are worth reporting:
1. Ada 9X would get a very good rating as an initial teaching language if it
could be emphasised that the Restrictions pragma can be used by tutors to
preclude the use of features like tasking by students.
2. GUI interfaces are important, but I note Ada vendors are providing these.
3. The free GNAT Ada compiler makes a big difference to Universities.
4. It is almost impossible to show that serious C++ applications don't have
a memory leak.
5. There is very little support for C or C++ as an initial teaching language.
6. The availability of information on Ada 9X was good, thanks to DoD.
7. Pascal is currently the most popular initial teaching language in UK
Universities.
8. Several companies have moved from C++ to Smalltalk.
Brian Wichmann.
