341.0. "Functional or Dynamic Languages" by SUBWAY::BRIGGS (Have datascope, will travel.) Fri Aug 21 1992 10:22
What is future of functional languages in the commerical programming
market?
Apple seems to be interested in Dynamic Languages (DYLAN) and
I was hoping DEC might be too. I haveheard rumors that some
product groups may be evaluating Scheme as an extension language,
and my recent experiences with compiled Scheme and ML suggest
that 'efficiency' doensn't have to be the concern it once was.
I was encouraged by the appearance of the DYLAN language spec, which
is a Scheme derivative with the inclusion of a CLOS like object system
and modules.
Anyway, if there are any new developments in DEC with this sort of
stuff, I'd sure like to hear about it.
(Imagine the usual pot-shot at imperative languages and C here.)
regards,
ed

341.1 | Dylan at DEC | MSDOA::SECRIST | OSF/1: UNIX... improved. | Sat Oct 17 1992 03:50 | 9 |
|
If you follow comp.lang.lisp or comp.lang.scheme you will see
some group within DEC has created their own version of Dylan.
I think the sources live on "gatekeeper." If you haven't
followed up on this I'll go try to find the note I stashed away.
