184.0. "Base Product Marketing for Language Compilers" by PBSVAX::DOUCETTE (Chuck Doucette, Database A/D @CXO) Tue May 03 1988 18:31

If you would like to see a supported language product (i.e. a compiler)
on VMS (that doesn't currently exist), who is the appropriate person
to raise that concern with?

Specifically, I am thinking of Modula-2 (as opposed to VAX Pascal or
VAX Ada). I think I understand the phase process of product development
(although I'm in A/D); but I think the initialization of the phases of product
development should be done by a marketing or management person rather
than an engineer.

For Ultrix (UEG), the answer I was given was to raise this
issue with Base Product Marketing. I did and have forwarded
messages regarding market demand for language products to that person.
I also could post a note in the ULTRIX_REQS conference.

So, is there a similar person for the TL&E group on VMS?

Thanks,
Chuck

P.S.	I realize a marketing survey on the feasibility of a Modula-2
	language product has been done previously that was negative;
but, I still think there is a lot of internal and external
demand for such a product that is not being focused at
the right people so they can be aware of what demand does exist.

I'm not sure, but I thought that Base Product Marketing dealt with
both VMS and Ultrix. In which case, they're probably still the
    right people.

You should be aware that even though many people, like me, would
love to be able to use Modula on VMS, creating a new language product
is very difficult. Given the tradeoffs that are being made for
existing language products, a new language doesn't have much chance.

The base product marketing person I contacted were under UEG
(*Ultrix* Engineering Group) and I think it is safe to assume
they have nothing to do with choosing future VMS products.
Don't any marketing people read this conference who know where
to channel (internal or external) customer requests?
I realize that a new language on VMS doesn't have much chance
(which for some reason doesn't seem to be true on Ultrix).

For initiating new VMS language products, I suggest contacting Software
Development Tools (SDT) Product Management. This is Celeste (TLE::) LaRock's
organization.
