176.0. "DATABUS standard is in the works" by CHESS::KAIKOW () Sun Apr 10 1988 13:36

Recently the X3J15 committee was approved to begin work on a DATABUS standard.

DATABUS is supposed to be a general purpose business programming language
introduced in 1972.

Of the estimated 200 000 workstations that use DATABUS, 75% are on DATAPOINT
computers. Others run under MS-DOS, UNIX, XENIX, VMS, PRIMOS And AOS.

All of the above is from the unanimously approved SD-3 which is now assigned to
committee X3J15.

******************************************************************************

Thus far, I have not heard of any interest in DATABUS within DEC, so I decided
to spend time searching NOTES conferences today.

The following references to DATABUS have thus far been found:

In CLT::DIBOL, topic 31

In CLT::COBOL, topics 205 and 582

In TLE::LANGUAGES, topics 62, 101 and 143

******************************************************************************

Please note that there is already supposed to be an implementation of DATABUS
that runs on a VAX. I do not know who did it, however, the proposal to establish
the standard committee says that it exists, therefore it must, they wouldn't
lie, would they?

Because it runs on VMS and because we have some documented cases of conversions
being necessary yo sell some VAXen, somebody at DEC had better follow the
efforts of X3J15, if not join the committee.

I'll send a copy of this to the programming languages group in ZKO to see what
further develops.

I will be write-locking this note as I do not normally follow this conference.
