148.0. "Listing format??" by KOALA::STEVENS (Sue Stevens) Tue Sep 15 1987 11:44

Is there such a thing as a VAX language standard listing format? I was told
that there was, but cannot find anything written down about it. All the
different language listings that I have looked at have a slightly different
format. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,
	Sue Stevens

    I don't know of any standard listing format (which does not imply
    that none exist). There is a diagnostic file format, which are
    written by compilers to convey error information to the
    Language-Sensitive Editor.

148.2I know of someYIPPEE::DELISLETue Sep 15 1987 15:2821
    Some of the "standards" for listing files are:

      A form-feed at the top of each page (even the first one).

      Translate the logical name SYS$LP_LINES to find out the page size
      for the listing.

      The top three lines have a strict format of product name and version,
      date and time, etc.

    These and other standards are maintained by SQM. They have a private
    conference for layered product developers where they deposit all
    their "requirements" memos. The man that keeps me on my toes is
    Tom SQM::SKABO.

    There is also a conference devoted to DEC standards, and, yes, they
    are difficult to track down and do not all exist in machine readable
    form.

    Happy hunting,
    Ray
148.3I've seen reference to it recentlyDENTON::AMARTINAlan H. MartinTue Sep 15 1987 18:125
This issue was raised in some other conference within the past few months
(perhaps TLE::BLISS, q.v.). Someone did uncover an old standard (more
concrete than just recollections). I don't know whether it was under
SQM control or not.

    When I did the listing package for the VAX Ada compiler, I borrowed
    a copy of the std. from Rich Grove.

There is indeed a listing format standard. It was written by Peter Conklin
in 1978. I have a Xerox of a Xerox of a Xerox of it kicking around somewhere
in my office, but I couldn't find it just now. All of the compilers produced
in TLE and CLT conform to it.

RE: .5: I know you have one because my copy is a copy of yours, Paul!!!

I dug mine out last week for Gaylen Royal because someone on the Koala
project needed it - I can only assume it was you, Sue?

    		If not, I now know where mine is (near the top!)

Thanks to all.
