129.0. "ZUG??! - What kind of a language is *THAT*!?" by DUBSWS::MACKEY (Step to the music you hear...) Wed Feb 25 1987 11:50

Anyone out there ever heard of a language called ZUG? From what
I have heard it's a language for programming TP-type systems and
    results in very fast code.

All I know is that an application package being considered by a
customer here is programmed in it and they haven't heard of the
    language - neither have I.

    Any words of wisdom?

    Kevin,

Elsewhere in this file you will find a note of me asking about KARL.
    Here goes:-
On GEAC machines (built in Canada) originally there was ZOPL this
is system language BLISS/Macro ish then GEAC invented UG (User
Generator) as a HLL. This was ok but iffy in many ways. Than a company
called APAK went through EARL to KARL which is basically a HLL.
Not a compiler but a translator to ZOPL which then gets compiled
by the GEAC ZOPL compiler. This language seems to be used by a few
companies in the UK on GEAC kit. There is as yet no VAX version.

OK so far ?? Do you see a connection with ZUG? No - read on

In parallel with this Real Time Insurance Services (a Canadian Co
with offices in London) enhanced UG to give ZUG. This is a HLL which
is indeed suited to TP systems. They recently ported ZUG to VAX
    - GEAC are in a bad way, they are on a 6 month stay of execution
from the receiver so there is seen to be a migration need for present
GEAC customers. Now RTIS are actively sellin VAX solutions in ZUG.
One customer says I like the application and ZUG but not on GEAC
    - so they sell VAX. RTIS quote 400 active (yes active users) on
an 8500. I will give you a call but hope this may be of general
    interest.
