Are you aware of any features or characteristics that could be incorporated into a new version of the CDD (Common Data Dictionary) that would make it a more desirable product? In other words, what could be added to the next version of CDD that would make it more desirable or useful to the typical MIS shop? Or should it just remain an optional repository of record definitions that can (in theory) be shared between various VAX languages? If you have any insights or opinions on this topic, please reply to this note.

I think a useful feature for any data definition utility would be a utility that generates a symbolic structure dumper directly from the data definitions. For example, it might generate a table for each data structure which can be passed to a provided table driven dumping routine which uses the table to print a symbolic dump. The general form would be field-name = typed field value I've created such a table generator for my project. The same table that I use for dumping is also used by our structure integrity checker, which is probably another suggestion to make a note of (automatic integrity checker). Dave Blickstein |
