67.0. "ICON available at DEC?" by SUPER::HARBO () Thu Jun 27 1985 13:33

Is anyone aware of a VAX/VMS or ULTRIX system on the e-net which has a version
of the Icon programming language available? I think this is in the public
domain still.

I have a year-old copy of the VMS ICON distribution tape from the University
of Arizona. Although installing ICON has been on my midnite to-do list for
a long time, it hasn't percolated to the top yet.

In the time that has passed, there has been at least one new ICON version
(including important bug fixes) announced. Ordering the latest version is
near the top of my to-do list.

ICON is still available to anyone free of charge (unless you want to buy
a tape from the UofA).

How do you go about getting the latest version (is there a source other than
the University of Arizona)?

I was also interested in getting a UNIX* version of Icon running on ULTRIX-32.
Can you send UofA a tape and ask them to make a copy? How much do they charge?

Excerpt from Icon Newsletter #17:

    Icon Distribution Policy

The Icon programming language is a product of a research program in the
Department of Computer Science at The University of Arizona, and its
development has been supported in part by the National Science Foundation.
The results of this work are freely available to anyone who request them.

At present the only charge is for the media needed to distribute the
software. This means that the Icon distribution is an expense to the
Department. We prefer to handle it this way to facilitate the free
distribution of research results within the computing community. However,
the more interest there is in Icon, the more expensive this policy becomes.
At some future time, it may be necessary to all charges for the printing
of documentation, handling and shipping. But, for now, the distribution
    of Icon Material is free.

The implementations of Icon distribed by The University of Arizona are in
the public domain. There are no warranties of any kind associated with
this material -- it is simply freely available to interested persons.
The software may be used and copied without restriction or permission.
We prefer, however, that persons interested in Icon obtain material
directly from us. This allow us to keep track of users and inform them
[via the Icon Newsletter] of updates and new developments.

Does anyone on the net have a working copy of Ultrix Icon? The
one on the v2.2 unsupported tape simply compiles programs but simply
exits when you try to run them.

Even if that isn't all the program was written to do! :-)

    Thanks,
