| A note from a fellow Kiwi!
Depending on how far Databus has diverged from Cobol, you may be able to
write a SCAN program that translates it back into real COBOL. Alternatively
I find it hard to believe a milk analysis program is so complex that it
couldn't be translated lock-stock-and-barrel into something like Pascal.
I heard rumours that when Mitsubishi in Adelaide did this, they 1/2'ved the
sizes of their programs!

| There is a package called CLONE developed by ISI here in the states (the
same folks who developed SCOPE, the screen formatting package). It is
designed to handle TOPS-10/TOPS-20 COBOL to VAX COBOL, but since it is
table driven, the syntax and so forth tables can be modified to handle
other things as well. If the Databus syntax and lexical format is pretty
much the same as that of COBOL (i.e., a COBOL programmer can understand
the programs), there is a good chance CLONE could be set up to handle
it. CLONE either already runs on VAXen, or will very soon. (BTW, if
I'm not mistaken, CLONE is written in ANSI COBOL.)
Mail me if you'd like more details. I can send you a brochure on it,
but it will take a while to reach you. I can also give you a contact
name at ISI if that will help. Note: CLONE is not free, but we have
some sort of internal licensing deal, so you might be able to get it
and try it for free, then only pay a fee if it works out.

I have written a DATABUS -> VAX COBOL translator which is shipping
to customers.
General details, pricing, SPDs, etc. are available from

62.4 | Not really COBOL | NIPPER::HAGARTY | Australia, nowhere near Switzerland | Tue May 13 1986 20:52 | 11 |
| Ahhh Gi'day...
For the record, DATABUS is NOTHING like COBOL. I saw my first DATABUS
last night, and it has far more similarities to DIBOL (Pre DIBOL-83)
than COBOL, but its branching looks more Macro like in functionality,
with a COMPARE - GOTO IF {EQUAL, LESS, etc} pair of statements. Writing
a DATABUS - DIBOL translator wouldn't be hard to do for some of our
genii!
{dennis{{{ -- It's pretty horrible.

62.5 | Pending DATABUS standard committee | CHESS::KAIKOW | | Wed Mar 16 1988 16:53 | 7 |
| There has been a recent proposal to establish a DATABUS standards committee
(X3J15).
Is anybody in DEC working on DATABUS?
Does anybody in DEC care about DATABUS?
Please send MAIL to chess::Kaikow, if you have any input.
