| Sounds like some marketeering term for someone's specific product, rather
than the name of some standardized language. Stan Whitlock (EIFFEL::WHITLOCK)
might have heard about it, since he was APL project leader the last I heard.

| A quik [sic] response:
It might be Hewlett Packard's name for the APL which
runs on the HP 2000.

| There is a product produced by IBM called APL2. It's APL with a nested array
extension. IBM felt that nested arrays are such a large boost to the
language that it should be considered a new generation of the language (I
tend to agree BTW).
I've never heard of an APL for HP, although most of the products for their
2000 series do have that prefix.

| I can't believe I forgot this.
STSC calls their portable APL APL*PLUS 2000 and there is a version that
runs on VMS. In fact I have used it. It's a pretty much standard
implementation of their APL*PLUS timesharing system (STSC is mostly a
time-sharing firm that has their own APL) with an odd extension known
as APL-GOL that provides structure programming concepts.
I can state without reservation that my personal impression of the VAX
version is that it is unreliable, and not well-fitted nor integrated into
VMS. I believe that VAX-11 APL (DECs APL offering) is a clear winner
in nearly all catagories and should win any sales situation over APL*PLUS
2000. I believe there is either a Sales Update or Competitive Update article
on how to sell VAX-11 APL against STSC APL*PLUS 2000.
I recently chatted with the guy behind STSC APL*PLUS 2000. He was at DECUS
when we announced VAX APL and he didn't seem dissapointed that DEC came out
with an APL for the VAX. His charter seems to be to provide APL on as many
machines as possible in order to increase the availability and popularity
of APL. He publicly praised our implementation at DECUS and I think he
has since retired APL 2000 into maintenance only.

| So who came up with the 'right' APL 2000?
Just curious, Andy V
