| I've just installed emacs 19.29 on an WinNT 4.0 box. Also I'm new to NT.
I picked up the emacs curtesy of a Digital friend.
The emacs runs fine. EXCEPT, it will not read my emacs init file.
I reduced the .emacs file to the bare minimum and if I use the
-l flag the file is read and the single customization works fine.
I make sure that I have a HOME variable and that it set before I start
emacs up. I set this variable by folling the NT SYSTEM->ENVIRONMENT->USER
VARIABLES maze. When I check for it in the MS-DOS Prompt window, the
variable is set correctly.
Any ideas on what I need to setup?
------------
Also, where are the variables HOMEPATH and HOMEDRIVE defined for the
MS-DOS window. I want to change these, but can't find them.

| I've not used the NT version of Emacs (yet), but I can suggest a
temporary workaround to your problem, (in case you or someone else
aren't real familiar with Emacs).
M-x load-file ~/.emacs
(M-x is Escape x, or whatever your "Meta" key happens to be, followed
by x; this allows you to enter Emacs commands).
BTW, I don't mean to minimize your abilities or understanding, but
occasionally a new person might come along, and might benefit from such
explanations).
Meanwhile, I hope someone else gives you the REAL answer. I'd like to
hear it, too, so I won't have too much of a learning curve when I try
Emacs on Windows NT. One other thought: The answer to this MIGHT be
on the Emacs FAQ. I haven't checked there. You can find the
Frequently Asked Questions list for Emacs by doing an Alta Vista search
for emacs and FAQ and/or reading the Usenet newsgroup comp.emacs. You
might also want to ask the question there if you get a chance.
Best of luck in getting the answer. Let us know what you find out.
