1184.0. "DFA V7.0 does not install on Alpha V7.1 " by CSC32::D_SANFORD () Tue Feb 18 1997 19:37

    OpenVMS Alpha V7.1, Alphaserver 1000
    DEC Fortran V7.0

    Below the installation fails due to a file not found on image
    SYS$SYSTEM:DEC_FORTRAN.EXE, is it possible this kits looks for
    an existing compiler? I don't have a system without FORTRAN,
    but possibly only fails on new installations.

    I will try this tomorrow... The install log is included below.

    Regards, Drew Sanford

    This is rather strange - it seems to be a problem running the
    FORT$STARTUP procedure provided. I am especially puzzled by the
    reference to LIBRARIAN! Where did THAT come from? Does the user have
    any strange logical names defined?

    Have the customer try the installation again, adding /LOG/TRACE to the
    PRODUCT INSTALL command, and post the output.

I'll bet the customer has a FORT$MAIN logical name defined to be DEC_FORTRAN,
though that wouldn't explain the LIBRARIAN reference.

Please have the customer try this:

  $ SHOW LOGICAL FORT*
  $ SHOW LOGICAL F90*
  $ SET VERIFY
  $ @SYS$STARTUP:FORT$STARTUP

This should be done from the SYSTEM account. Then post the output.

  The problem is with "FORT$STARTUP.COM", it refers to DEC_FORTRAN.EXE
  and LIBRARIAN.EXE. This startup is different from previous startup
  files.

  I looked at "FORT$STARTUP.COM" which released with Fortran V6.3, but
  it does not have the format as seen below, but does install DEC_FORTRAN,
  from DEC Fortran V6.3 for Alpha:

$!
$! Install the DEC Fortran compiler
$!
$ CMD = "ADD"
$ IF F$FILE_ATTR("SYS$SYSTEM:DEC_FORTRAN.EXE","KNOWN") THEN CMD = "REPLACE"
$ INSTALL 'CMD SYS$SYSTEM:DEC_FORTRAN.EXE /OPEN/SHARED/HEADER_RESIDENT

  Did an early release do this? I will have the customer comment out
  the "INSTALL" as I believe the product will then install.

    No version of FORT$STARTUP.COM that we ever shipped looked like what
    you have posted at the end of the message. The customer must have
    modified the copy they had and put it in SYS$SPECIFIC:[SYS$STARTUP] or
    SYS$MANAGER:. The V6.3 version did install DEC_FORTRAN.EXE as shown at
    the beginning of the message, but that file should have been replaced
    during the V7.0 installation. The customer modified the file and
    copied it to a different location than the original.

    Delete all copies of SYS$STARTUP:FORT$STARTUP.COM and reinstall.
