1168.0. "Formatted WRITE ACCVIOs in /DEBUG" by CSC32::HENNING (A rose with no thorns) Fri Feb 07 1997 16:27

    Compiler:  	DFAV V6.3-711-293V
    RTL:	FORRTL V01-05.297 (from FORRTLAVE01070)

    Appreciate your input/comment on the following, and will cross-post to
    DEBUG conference:

    A customer reports that a Fortran program that is compiled and linked
    /DEBUG ACCVIOs at execution of a formatted I/O statement.

    %SYSTEM-F-ACCVIO, access violation, reason mask=00, virtual
       address=A05E7904, PC=A05E7904, PS=0000001B

    The program fails with an ACCVIO from RUN/DEBUG or RUN/NODEBUG. If the
    image is linked /NODEBUG, the program executes without error. I've
    attached customer's commands and output to the end of this message.

    I've been unable to reproduce the behavior, using the same compiler and
    RTL. The ACCVIO persists after installing the most recent versions of
    the ECO kits ALPACRT09_061, ALPDEBU06_070 and ALPLIBR04_070, and
    rebooting the system.

    Checksums of the following images (in process space at the ACCVIO) were
    consistent with expected checksum values for the images:

    CMA$TIS_SHR			DPML$SHR
    DBGTBKMSG                   LIBOTS
    DEBUG                       LIBRTL
    DEC$FORRTL                  SHRIMGMSG
    DECC$MSG                    SYS$SSISHR
    DECC$SHR

    Are there any suggestions as to what to check?

    Thanks in advance,
    Mary

Does the customer's system have DECps installed, by any chance? See note
296. I'd look to see what kind of software that uses a background monitor
process or driver they may have running, as it's clear that something is
corrupting registers behind the back of the RTL.

    Hi Steve,

    The customer indicates that the system doesn't have DECps installed,
    and that the problem occurs even without the format:

       WRITE (6,*) 'Hello'

    Per Lon (note 1836.1, DEBUG conference), RUN/DEBUG doesn't activate any
    debugger images, so the Debugger may not be involved. Am having my
    customer test behavior when he compiled /NODEBUG/NOOPT.

There is something "external" to Fortran and its RTL that is at work.
Something is corrupting registers or memory. Please get the output of
a SHOW SYSTEM and an ANALYZE/SYSTEM (SHOW EXEC) and post it here.

    Steve, I've attached output from the requested commands. Am awaiting
    the results of tests when program is compiled /NODEBUG/NOOPT.

    Thanks,

Ah, Dr. Cohen... he and I have conversed in the past.

My next suggestion would be to do a "MIN" boot of the system so that none of
the various layered products are started or strange drivers loaded, and then
try running the program.

What happens if the program is linked /NOSYSSHR?

I still think this is not Fortran-related - that there is either a hardware
problem (unlikely) or some erroneous driver that is corrupting things.

    > Ah, Dr. Cohen...

    Hope it was as a good experience for you as it has been for me! (seems
    to be very nice)  :^)

    Agreed -- will have him test the program after a minimal boot.

    > What happens if the program is linked /NOSYSSHR?

    I'm assuming you're looking for corruption in DEC$FORRTL, eliminated
    when the FOR$$* (or other) RTL symbol references are resolved from
    STARLET.OLB.  True?
1168.8QUARK::LIONELFree advice is worth every centWed Feb 12 1997 15:257
Yes, and other effects I have seen when something goes wrong in activating
a shareable image.

Dr. Cohen has been very pleasant to deal with. I met him at a DECUS a while
back.

    Strange days.... Dr. Cohen performed a MIN boot, and tested the

    When he linked the image /NOSYSSHR, the program ran to completion:

    $ FORTRAN/DEBUG/NOOPT H
    $ LINK/DEBUG/NOSYSSHR H
    $ RUN/nodebug H

    Hello

    %DEBUG-I-EXITSTATUS, is '%SYSTEM-S-NORMAL, normal successful completion'

    Dr. Cohen now says that he's seen the same error on another node in his
    cluster where he had created the image. So, it again comes down to
    DEC$FORRTL -- the file, or some interaction with its image sections.
    I'm going to gather more information about the cluster config. More in
    a bit.

Ok. Let's see the output of the following:

  $ SHOW LOGICAL *FORRTL*
  $ DIR SYS$SHARE:DEC$FORRTL.EXE,CMA$TIS_SHR,DECC$SHR
  $ INSTALL LIST SYS$SHARE:DEC$FORRTL
  $ INSTALL LIST SYS$SHARE:CMA$TIS_SHR
  $ INSTALL LIST SYS$SHARE:DECC$SHR
  $ ANALYZE/IMAGE/INTER SYS$SHARE:DEC$FORRTL  (First four screens)

I'd also suggest sending him DFAV 7.1 to see what happens...

    Thanks much to you both!

    Ken, the LDRIMG info IMAGE_MANAGEMENT matches the image that came in
    ECO kit ALPSYS15_061. The SYS$PUBLIC_VECTORS.EXE on his system appears
    to have the same ident as the image that came in ECO kit ALPSYS11_061.
    I'll have ident and MAP info from Dr. Cohen in my next reply.

            Patch Information

                    There are no patches at this time.

    This version of DEC$FORRTL came from ECO kit FORRTLAVE01070. I'll
    include the INSTALL output in my next reply.

    BTW, the error is seen on the 3 Alpha nodes of a 4-node mixed-arch
    cluster. Each Alpha node has its own system disk. Only 1 node of the
    3 has a Fortran compiler. Am checking on the consistency of exec
    images on the 3 nodes, and am looking for other common points.

    One last thought. After Ken's comment about $IMGSTA, I confirmed a
    number of exec images that came from other ECO kits, including
    SYS$PUBLIC_VECTORS and IMAGE_MANAGEMENT. I've asked the customer to
    install ALPSYS17_061 and ALPSYS19_061, which contain the latest
    versions of these images.

    More later,

	Patch Information

		There are no patches at this time.

    FWIW, these are significan points seen so far:

    * the 3 nodes where program ACCVIOs are running OpenVMS Alpha V6.1.
    * the ACCVIO occurs at execution of a WRITE statement that may or
      may not be formatted.
    * the program completes if the program is linked /DEBUG/NOSYSSHR.
    * the program ACCVIOs if linked /DEBUG.
    * the PC/VA for the ACCVIO lies outside of a system/user image.
    * the 3 systems have loaded the same versions of IMAGE_MANAGEMENT
      and SYS$PUBLIC_VECTORS.
    * the version of IMAGE_MANAGEMENT on these systems is not the latest
      version (available in ALPSYS17_061). Customer will install this
      kit. (BTW, ALPSHAD09_061 is also installed on all nodes. The ECO
      summary article for that kit requires that ALPSYS17_061 also be
      installed.)
    * the problem persists after a minimal or full boot.
    * these non-SSB versions of exec images are loaded by both a minimal
      and full boot of all 3 nodes:

         Image			ECO Kit
         =====			=======
         RMS			ALPRMS03_061+		+ = higher version
         SYS$DKDRIVER		AXPSCSI02_061+		    of kit exists
         MSCP, LOCKING,		ALPSHAD09_061
         SYS$CLUSTER,
         IO_ROUTINES,
         SECURITY
         LMF$GROUP_TABLE	ALPLMF02_061
         IMAGE_MANAGEMENT	ALPSYS15_061+
         LOGICAL_NAMES		ALPRAMP01_061
         MESSAGE_ROUTINES	ALPQMAN01_062+
         PROCESS_MANAGEMENT,	ALPSYS11_061+
         SYS$PUBLIC_VECTORS
         SYSDEVICE		ALPSYS14_061

    * The 3 nodes do not have the same versions of DEC$FORRTL.EXE or
      DECC$SHR.EXE loaded, but do have the same (SSB) version of
      CMA$TIS_SHR.EXE.

    I've asked Dr. Cohen to load ALPSYS17_061 and ALPSYS19_061 on the 3
    Alpha nodes, to put in place the latest versions of IMAGE_MANAGEMENT
    and SYS$PUBLIC_VECTORS.

    Based on info so far, should I still ask him to install DFAV V7.1 on
    the one licensed node?

    Continued thanks!

Well, I notice that BONES and SPOCK are running an old DEC$FORRTL - only VGER
has the new one. Since this is a cluster with separate system disks, be
sure to install the new RTL on all nodes. (However, I can't figure out how
that would cause this problem.)

Does the problem happen on all three nodes? At the same VA even with different
DEC$FORRTLs????

    Stop the presses -- the problem was solved by loading ALPSYS19_061,
    which replaced IMAGE_MANAGEMENT.

    Thanks to you, Steve and Ken!
