2147.0. "installation fails deleting sys$starlet_c.tlb" by CSC32::J_HENSON (Don't get even, get ahead!) Wed Apr 09 1997 16:19

Dec C V4.0 -> V5.5-002, OpenVMS V6.1, vax, standalone (non-clustered)

A customer was upgrading, and the installation failed because it could not
delete vmi$root:[syslib]starlet_c.tlb. It could not delete it because
it could not find it.

After the installation failed, we were able to successfully run the IVP.
Also, I did verify that sys$starlet_c.tlb does NOT exist on his system.

I have been looking through kitinstall.com, and it appears to me that
deleting sys$starlet_c.tlb is the last thing it does. However,
I'm not exactly an expert when it comes to DCL, so I may have
missed something.

It seems to me that even though the installation said it failed, it really
didn't. Could someone verify that, please? The mere fact that the
IVP was successful should be proof, but a sanity check would be nice.
I do need to get back to the customer with a definite answer.

Also, it appears that the installation procedure has a glitch that
needs to ironed out, so I thought I had better mention it.

Thanks,

Jerry

2147.1Looks Like New Twist On Old Bug...XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringWed Apr 09 1997 18:022
 This looks like a variation on a known bug, see 1865.*.

I believe that this is a different issue. Note 1865 discussed a problem
with the installation of v5.3. The problem was to have been fixed in
the v5.5 installation procedure.

In this case, the error occurred while installing v5.5 where the previous
version was v4.0. It seems that that installation procedure is
missing the fact that sys$starlet_c.tlb is not there, and tries to
delete it, at which time it fails.

2147.3Another one!CSC32::J_HENSONDon't get even, get ahead!Fri Apr 11 1997 13:3716
I need a definite answer for this. I got another customer today who
experienced the exact same problem. He was uprading from dec c/vax v4.0
to v5.5, and the installation failed because it couldn't find
sys$starlet_c.tlb. When I had him run the ivp, it ran successfully.

My guess is that we're going to see more of this, and the CSC needs
to know what to tell customers. Telling them that we think they're
ok, but are not certain just ain't cutting it. Customers are pushing
back and some are not very understanding.

So, can I please get an answer to this? I also need a prognosis for
when this will be fixed.

Thanks,

Jerry

2147.5Acknowledged problem.DECC::ERICWWed Apr 16 1997 15:005
It appears the installation procedure is attempting to delete the file twice.
This is related the the fact that VMSinstal DELETEs are deferred and the file
may still exist even though the DELETE command has already been issued.

Eric,

Thanks for the update. Can you confirm that even though this happens,
the installation is still ok?

Thanks,

Jerry
2147.7Fixed.DECC::ERICWFri Apr 18 1997 10:527
The problem is fixed and will most likely appear in the soon to be released
sanity kit.

As long as the file has been deleted, then the installation should be ok barring
any other errors.
