4059.0. "BOOKS:A Roman Cookery Book" by FIEVEL::FILGATE (Bruce Filgate SHR3-2/W4 237-6452) Sat Oct 07 1995 12:23
Per Steve Kallis in SCA conference in 1985:
If you want to go back earlier, there's the classic _A Roman Cookery Book_
by Apicius. It's the oldest Eurpoean cookbook known, and some of the
dishes are very interesting, particularly to moderns who are more car-
niverous than they. There are MANY editions of Apicius' book, by the
way, and some versions suggest how to approximate the spice LIQUAMEN.
(Apicius, by the way, killed himself when his wealth was reduced to
the modern equivalent of $65 million. Was afraid he wouldn't be able
to maintain his accustomed lifestyle.)
This one is available in paperback, the hard cover is shown to be
available but has been unseen for quite awhile and out of stock at
the publisher. (per http://www.amazon.com)
