4048.0. "Bananas go bad within hours of purchase: why?" by TOOK::MORRISON (Bob M. LKG1-3/A11 226-7570) Tue Aug 08 1995 15:46

  Recently I have been having a bad time with the bananas I buy at Donelan's
in Littleton. (This is a full service supermarket, for those who don't know.)
They seem to go straight from green to brown/black without turning yellow in
between. And though they are firm when I examine them in the store, they turn
squishy within 3-24 hours after I bring them home.
  I'm storing them the same way I always have, that is, on a counter at room
temp. And I'm handling them gently.
  My guess is that something has gone wrong on the supplier side. Is this
happening to customers of other stores too, or is it specific to Donelan's?
These bananas are Turbana brand; I don't know what country they are from.
Has something happened in Latin America recently that has caused trouble with
the banana crop?

    1.	Donelans has awful produce. Don't buy anything there.

    2.	Turbana bananas are not as good as Chiquita.

    3.	I buy my most of my produce at specific farm stands or Roche
    	brothers. I have found that my bananas when bought slightly
    	green last for about five days, FWIW.

4048.2Chiquitas the way to goPCBUOA::LPIERCEDo the watermelon crawlWed Aug 09 1995 11:193
    Chiquita's are the only banana that stays yellow for some time - I
    found. I would also never buy any fruit/veggies from a grocery store

4048.3Hot & humid makes them turn fasterJUMP4::JOYPerception is realityThu Aug 10 1995 14:449
    Bob,
       I buy my product mostly at Market Basket and the bananas seem to be
    getting brown faster too. BUT, I have noticed that the speed that they
    ripen is directly proportional to how hot and humid it is. If you put
    bananas in the 'fridge, the skins will turn brown but the insides don't
    go mushy. That may be a solution until the weather turns cooler.

    I have to put in a note in favor of Donelan's produce. Compared to
    other supermarkets in the Littleton/Westford area, I'd rate their
    produce highly.

    Of course, compared to some places like Idlewilde, it's not great.

4048.5Put Bananas in Sealed Plastic BagBSS::PARKSMon Aug 14 1995 14:5612
    I've found a trick that will help bananas ripen without going bad.

    Put the bananas in a plastic bag and tie it shut. Leave the bananas
    out at room temperature. The bananas will ripen nicely, and will last
    a nice long time before starting to develop spots.

    I've had bananas last for a week without getting brown using this
    method. Outside of the plastic bag the bananas start developing spots
    within a day or two.

4048.6Oxidation & yellow is not always ripeDUNKLE::MCDERMOTTChris McDermottTue Aug 15 1995 14:4011
Your banana's are oxidizing. Keeping them in a plastic bag will reduce the
exposure to 02. Keeping them the the 'fridge (colder) slows down the rate of
oxidation.

An other solution to your problem is to borrow my 14 month old daughter. The
bananas won't stick around long enough to go bad. Mmmmmmmm.

I suspect the reason you see the difference in how fast different brands of
bananas go bad is that one brand may be riper than the other even though they
appear to be the same color. Sometimes the bananas are "gased" which will
causes them to turn yellow but it doesn't ripen them a bit.
