4035.0. "Good Food Show, Olympia" by KERNEL::SMITHERSJ (Living on the culinary edge....) Fri Mar 10 1995 10:35

Went to the BBC Good Food show at Olympia yesterday and met Gary
Rhodes. Went all gooey when he gave me his autograph.

    What was the show like?

    Is it worth going?

    What goodies did you get?

Gary (spikey hair) Rhodes seem to be a fairly down to earth sort of
cook, though he does tend to go over the top sometimes. I still
remember him, on entering Scotland, going to a transport cafe and
tucking into a plate of fried sausages, fried bacon, fried tomatoes,
fried black pudding, fried eggs, fried...for breakfast. Damn, I'm
    getting hungry.

First time I had been to the show so can't compare with other years.
I went with a list of stands I wanted to visit and listings of when
celebrity cooks were demonstrating. (Didn't stick to the plan though).
Impressions? I expected more demos - most of the stalls were just
selling. Most cultures were catered for, indian, chinese, thai, italian
etc. The prices were slightly cheaper but not enough for the pain
of carrying it around. Freebies were on most stands but these were
limited to bite size pieces. Only a couple of stands gave away packets
of things. I would of liked to have seen more recipe idea booklets too.
We spent a lot of time at the Wine section (funnily enough), bought a
glass for a pound, and then were free to sample any wines we chose.

Overall, it was worth going to if you mix the stands with the demos.
However, I didn't feel as though the stands were offering me things that
I didn't already know about or could buy easily enough elsewhere.
(This maybe unfair in specialised stands like sugar decorations)

Oh, allow for extra travelling time as the tube from Earls Court to
Olympia is a restricted service and doesn't run as often as the other
lines (we had to wait 10-15 mins-ish).
