4013.0. "GUMMY BEARS" by GRANPA::JARTIM () Tue Jan 10 1995 16:10

Can anyone provide me with a recipe for Gummy Bears/Gummy Worms.
I checked in 5.* but couldn't find anything. I know I saw something in
one of the notes about these.

    Thanks in advance.

HOw about a dirt cake? Gummy worms look great in Dirt cake.

    Here's the recipe:

1 lb oreo cookies, crushed (it's easier to freeze them first before
crushing them. I usually crush them in a food processer)

    1 qt milk
    1 pkg cream cheese
1 12 oz tub cool whip
    2 packages instant vanilla pudding.

Crush the oreos and set aside.

Combine the rest of the ingredients to make a pudding like mixture.

Take a clean flower pot (or I've used a long try as well, especially
with the worms) and line the bottom with the crushed oreos. Then put
in a layer of the pudding mixture. Keep alternating until you have all
oreos on top, looking like dirt. You can take the gummy worms and
either just put them on top, or dig them into the mixture. They look
    neat.

I got the impression that .0 wants to make gummy worms or gummy bears.
I don't think I've ever seen a recipe in here, but used to make my own
gum drops (pretty easy, but I don't have the recipe here). One time I
cooked them too long and they came out like ju jubes - or gummy bears
(they weren't quite as hard as ju jubes, but not as soft as gum drops -
that's pretty much gummy bear consistency, isn't it?). I have no idea
where you'd get molds for the worms and bears, though. I used a
chocolate mold to make large spice gum drops. Right now, I honestly
don't remember if I sugared the molds or rolled them in sugar
afterwards. The time I cooked them too long, sugar wouldn't stick.

If this is what you want, I may be able to find the recipe.

Thanks for the previous suggestions but yes, I am looking for a
recipe to make the candy. If you can enter the gum drop recipe
    I'd appreciate it.

FINALLY! I remembered to bring in the candy cookbook.

This is from "Candy Cookbook" by Mildred Brand, Ideals Publishing
Corporation. The book is copyrighted, but there is no date in it. I
have the ISBN number if anyone wants it.

    Gumdrops

1 1-3/4 oz package powdered fruit pectin
    3/4 cup water
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1 cup sugar
    1 cup light corn syrup
3 to 4 drops peppermint oil (or other flavoried oil)*
    Red or green food color

Lightly grease candy molds^. In a small saucepan, combine fruit pectin,
water and baking soda. Set aside. In a 2-quart saucepan, combine
sugar and corn syrup, mixing well. Cook both mixtures, stirring
alternately until foam subsides in soda mixture, about five mintutes.
Pour pectin mixture IN A SLOW STEADY STREAM into the boiling sugar
mixture, stirring constantly. Boil and stir one minute more. Remove
from heat and stir in flavoring and food color. Pour into prepared
molds. Let set for 24 hours. Take out of molds. Let stand at least a
day before packaging. Makes about 20 pieces, depending on the mold.

*I used spice flavored oils to make spice gumdrops: clove, wintergreen,
spearmint, peppermint, etc. I also used fruit flavored oils and made
cherry, orange slices (in fruit shaped molds), etc.

^I used plastic chocolate candy molds for mine. I used a "standard"
filled chocolate mold to make large gumdrops. I used a leaf shaped mold
to make spearmint leaves for my sister.

One time, I cooked them longer than the 1 additional minute (two or
three minutes) and ended up with a jujube texture, which would be more
    like gummy bears.

NOTE: Immediately after unmolding, I rolled them in granulated sugar.
For gummy bears/worms, you probably want to follow the directions and
    let them air dry.

    Good luck!
    Susan
