Joyce Chen, restaurateur, grocer, and cook book author, died
yesterday. She was in her 70s. Through her restaurant, cooking
classes, oriental grocery stores, and PBS cooking shows, she
introduced many in the Boston area and elsewhere to the joys of
Mandarin and Sichuan Chinese food and cooking, many years before the
Sichuan food fad hit New York. It was one episode of her PBS series
"Joyce Chen Cooks", on how to grow your own bean sprouts and what to
do with them afterwards, that got me started in cooking, and her cook
book has been a valuable kitchen companion.

| Whenever we used to eat at her restaurant she always came by the table
before we left and gave my son some extra fortune cookies in a bag.
Sorry she's gone. She was a nice lady.
