3944.0. "This is your chance Fathers" by FMAJOR::WALTER () Fri Jun 10 1994 15:24

A similar note is posted in EATS.

I am wondering what to do about Father's day. I am wondering if I should take
my husband out myself, without our son, or if he should join us, or if we
should invite the other fathers in the family. It occurred to me shortly
after that we are having a father's day pool party at my in-laws. This
leads me to believe that I should have something with just us before this
bbq/party.

What would the cooks men like at a barbeque that is intended for the men
of our lives?

They did this for the women on mother's day and it was burgers, dogs,
coleslaw, potato salad for main entrees; pretzels, frozen an-lee egg
rolls for appetizers and; store bought apple pie. Needlesstosay, you
know who does the cooking in our family! :^) (Actually, that is not a true
statement. I believe they got scared of the quantity that they needed
and thought it easier to buy things already made.) In any case, we
will not be purchasing these types of things but I was hoping to get
some insight before we plan the exact menu as to men's preferences.
Don't tell me greasy burgers, I got that in the EATS file. :)

Thanks in advance,
cj

3944.1I want my son thereNUBOAT::HEBERTCaptain BlighFri Jun 10 1994 15:477
I think you should bring your son; that's what made him a father.

Maybe let your son be part of the decision-making process for where to
go? Even if he's a baby, let him point at a list or a drawing or
something.

3944.2Great idea !FMAJOR::WALTERFri Jun 10 1994 16:0213
    I agree with you Art. So far, we have yet to go anywhere without him
    and the in-laws are upset that they never get to babysit! However, we
    both work full time so our time with Paul is very limited as it is.

    I just didn't know if he would want a romantic dinner out without Paul
    because he isn't even 8 months old yet. I also thought that we would
    all be together for the actual Father's Day at the bbq party. I still
    like your idea and specially the one about him helping me making a
    decision.

    Thanks!

    	The reason it's called FATHERS DAY kinda makes me think the kids
    	should be there too, or is your husband also your father?

3944.4Something to think about...FMAJOR::WALTERFri Jun 10 1994 17:136

    Very true -1. However, when asked what most women wanted for Mother's
    day, the standard comment was, "a romantic dinner out ... without the
    kids!"

I concur. Whatever gets planned for Fathers' day for me, I want my kids
involved, somehow. They're both in their 20's now, and the older one can't
be home that day, but they're what make it Fathers' day for me.

And, to stay on track with the conference, it _will_ be something_on_the_grill!

 re: Karen

 Good idea. Father's Day is pointless (for me) without the children. It's
a day to enjoy family.

 However, it would certainly be appreciated to be shown a romantic evening
out. After all, it's nice to know we still supply a spark on occasion. ;-)

    Something on the grill sounds good...lately we've moved away from
    burgers and dogs to ribs and chicken. I like Lloyd's BBQ sauce and
    really slop it on the ribs and chicken. Add potato salad and a fresh
    strawberry shortcake for dessert and my husband would be happy! Then,
    let the kids clean up (the best part of when they get older 8^)).

     Fathers day is just that..."His day" Ask him. Personaly I'm
     gone for the day fishing with other Fathers, no wife no kids.

                                    I'd ask him what he would like.

3944.10and the fathers say..............FMAJOR::WALTERWed Jun 15 1994 14:3722
    Well considering all the replies, I did ask my husband what he wanted.
    He agreed a day with "his" father(s) and his son. As for the bbq,
    general concensus for menu by dads are as follows:

    Pickled Herring
    Chicken Wings

    Grilled Swordfish Kabobs
    Grilled Steak
    Grilled Chicken Breasts

    Tossed Salad
    Cheesey Potatoes

    Watermelon
    Cake

    We need a couple more vegies and appetizers if anyone has any ideas on
    what will go well with this menu.

    Thanks much!
