I have read 2419.*, but it only covers homemade pita bread, and my question is about store-bought. I am on a low-salt diet, and have had trouble getting some foods in low-salt versions. I also need to avoid high concentrations of yeast, and that rules out most regular breads. A year ago I began eating pita bread instead, and have had good luck. I usually buy Sahara brand because it is readily available and keeps better than some other brands. Recently I noticed that I got thirsty after eating it. I read the label and found that each pocket has 290 mg of sodium. This seems quite high. Does anyone know of a brand of white pita bread that has low sodium (less than 100 mg)? (I don't digest whole wheat well, so please don't suggest it.) I am planning to check some other brands myself, but that will require some traveling, so I thought I would ask here first.

3931.1 | Why no date stamp on Toufayan pita bread? | TOOK::MORRISON | Bob M. LKG1-3/A11 226-7570 | Thu Jun 16 1994 17:39 | 7 |
A week after posting this, I found that my store also carries Toufayan pita bread and that it has about half the sodium Sahara does. However, there is no date stamp. Why, I don't know. I tried some and it was stale, which is not surprising. There apparently is no coded date stamp either, so the store has no way of knowing it's stale, unless it's rock-hard or moldy. I wrote to the company and complained. No response yet. Have any other readers tried this brand? If so, what do you think? | |||||

I have changed the title of this note so it will be easier to find in the directory, the next time one is created. Has anyone else bought Toufayan pita bread in eastern MA or NH? If so, did the package have a date stamp? It appears few stores around here carry it. |
