3906.0. "High-end kitchen/cooks stores" by DCEIDL::CLARK (Ward Clark) Fri Feb 04 1994 10:47

Audio consumers can choose from three categories of stores:

mass merchants / discount stores (e.g., Lechmere, Circuit City)
	speciality stores (e.g., Cookin', Tweeter)
high-end/audiophile (e.g., The Natural Sound, Ensemble Audio & Video)

Based on my limited experience, I've found kitchen/cooks stores in the
first two categories. What I'm looking for is a high-end cooking
equipment store in greater Boston, a place with expert staff that
carries only the best quality goods.

Perhaps what you want is a restaurant supply store.

I second Hal's recommendation. There are plenty of commercial suppliers
who sell to "civilians". They won't even necessarily try to overcharge,
and they are often happy to answer questions. We had good luck with
Westerman's in Worcester. I know there are many places in Boston and
Lowell, and there are probably quite a few in Manchester, NH. The
Yellow Pages is one place to start.

By the way, Williams-Sonoma's stuff is pretty decent, and compares
favorably with a lot of commercial equipment. They just don't carry
some of the specialized equipment, and we've found that their prices on
a lot of items are exorbitant.

In a number of cookbooks, I've seen recommendations to visit
a restaurant supply store - it's worth visiting a good one just
for the experience of seeing some of the amazing stoves and stuff.

I don't own any fancy high-dollar appliances, but that's where
to get them. And you can find things like large size, heavy duty
cutting boards that can't seem to be found elsewhere.

The prices at Williams Sonoma are outrageous - but I did find a
great pizza stone there that's much better than any others
    I've seen.

Gerrish Peters in Lawrence is a restaurant supply store that caters to
the general public. It's right on Rt. 28, but parking is difficult.

A new kitchen store just opened up in Bedford, MA - The Gourmet Trading Post
on the main drag. It's pretty well-stocked with books, utensils, gadgets,
cheeses, specialty items etc. Similar to Williams Sonoma, but different
too!
