3870.0. "In need of help on terminology" by BICYCL::RYER (This note made from 100% recycled bits.) Wed Nov 24 1993 10:55
I apologize profusely for any inappropriateness that this topic might have,
but I'm in need of some help in terminology. I have been invited to have
Thanksgiving dinner at some friend's house and I boasted to them not to be
afraid to assign me something that needs to be cooked, since I consider
myself to be a good cook (at least as single guys go). Well, when I got home
last night (after 10:00), I had a message, and the hostess asked me to bring
a "relish tray". Well, I thought, great, what the heck is a relish tray?
Several things come to mind, like a tray of little vegetable pieces with some
dressing, a tray full of things like stuffed olives and sweet gerkins, or
perhaps a collection of things like chutney and the like. Since I don't want
to embarrass myself unnecessarily (particularly after proclaiming my culinary
prowess), what's the general consensus on what a relish tray is?
Thanks in advance.
Befuddled in Colorado Springs,

In our house the relish tray was a crystal tray (although I imagine
that part is not absolutely necessary) filled with black olives, green
olive, sweet pickles, and cream cheese stuffed celery.
Nothing fancy but very memorable (enough for me to go out and buy a
crystal tray just for this very thing).

| Since this could mean several things to several different people,
you can call up the host, and sound very expert when you explain
to her that there are different styles of trays. Ask what HER
perference is, and that you'd be happy to make it in any style
she pleased.
diplomacy over embarrassment. It should work 8-).

| The party stores sell platic trays that look kinda like crystal that
would make a very good relish tray.. and you can leave it there.

| Out traditional relish tray consisted of sweet gerkin (sp) pickles, black
and green olives, cranberry sauce and celery sticks stuffed with
smurkee instead of just cream cheese.
SMURKEE
3 hard boiled eggs cut up
1 8 ounce package cream cheese room temperature
1 small onion cut up
1 small jar green olives with pimentos cut up
Mix all together and stuff your celery. This can also be used as a
chip dip.

| If I were single and was asked to bring a relish tray to a dinner, I'd
go over to Albertson's (they have the best produce) and have them make
one up for me.
