3853.0. "Low-salt canned veggies without metallic taste?" by TOOK::MORRISON (Bob M. LKG1-3/A11 226-7570) Thu Sep 23 1993 12:35

I have looked under "can" and "veg" and there is nothing on the following, so
I'm starting a new topic.
I would like to buy low-salt veggies (specifically, string beans) in cans.
One of the local stores carries Del Monte unsalted green beans. I tried them
(including the new-label cans that just appeared on the shelves) and they
have a strong metallic taste. I can't eat frozen green beans (it's a long
story I would rather not get into), and regular green beans are too salty for
my taste. I don't want to fuss with raw green beans, but may consider it if
I have to.
My question is, is it possible to buy canned low-salt veggies (such as
string beans, peas, etc.) in central New England that don't have a strong
metallic taste? I am willing to travel a little if I can find a source of
them, because they travel well (unlike frozen foods) and I can buy a 2-3
month's supply. I am in Littleton, MA.

One more thing: I do not notice a metallic taste in Del Monte regular green
beans. Apparently the salt keeps the metal from leaching into the beans.
Perhaps the technology doesn't exist to avoid a metallic taste in canned un-
salted string beans. Are there any food chemists reading this?

Did you try calling DelMonte (maybe from WATS information?) and asking a
consumer relations rep if they perhaps packed them in bottles as well?
Your local store may not carry them, but could possibly order them for you?
Maybe another packer uses bottles? Green Giant?

Jack's note reminded me that we have several brands at our grocer
who pack their veggies in jars (this was so that they can be microwaved
without removal). However, the brands may be exclusively Canadian.
If I remember, I will check the next time I am there.
I know for sure though, that one of the brands is the one of the
Loblaws house brands. Loblaws now sells some of their products to
some US supermarkets, so there is a chance you may see this brand.
(have you seen President's Choice? That's them).

Packing in jars is the obvious solution to the metallic taste of unsalted
veggies in cans, but I have never seen veggies (mixed, string beans, peas, etc.)
in jars in supermarkets in New England.

What store(s) carry them? If I happen to be in that area, I can stock up on
them.
A related issue: my local store recently stopped carrying Green Giant mixed
veggies in cans; the only canned mixed veggies they carry now are about 1/3
potatoes, which I don't want. Are they available in other stores in the area?

I would also suggest that you try a few health food stores. Sometimes
    the cans are lined.

I don't know, but Lynne Mandile (who posted .5) is now gone from DIGITAL.

Did you get anywhere with DelMonte as suggested earlier, Bob?

I will write or call them, now that I know I'm unlikely to get an answer
here.
