    Carmel corn requires karo syrup. I have the recipe at home and will
    try to remember to bring it in tomorrow.

    You might want to look into your cookbooks (or in this notesfile)
    for candy recipes. It has been awhile, but I remember using Karo
    to make candies.

 What is `Karo Syrup' really? Is it a thick, under processed sugar syrup?
 How is it manufactured?

    Karo is corn syrup; it's thick and either clear or brownish colored.
3709.9Barb's Carmel Corn recipeSPECXN::B_BRADACHFri Dec 11 1992 11:5325
    Carmel Corn

    4 sticks of margarine or butter
    4 cups brown sugar
    1 cup of light corn syrup (karo syrup)
    1 teaspoon of baking soda
    2 teaspoons of vanilla
    jar of unsalted nuts (8 oz.) optional

    Boil the margarine, brown sugar and corn syrup for 5 minutes.
    Remove from heat and add baking soda and vanilla. Make sure that
    the pot you use is large, when you add the baking soda it foams up
    quite a bit.

    Pour over popcorn, mix well. Bake in large roasting pan, I use
    a blue oval roaster to do this, at 250 degrees for 1 hour stirring
    every 15 minutes.

    I usually pop the corn directly into the roaster and fill it about
    9/10ths full. Yes, this makes a huge amount, but this recipe is
    great.

    Enjoy,

3709.10Karo syrup on pancakesASDG::BECHTLERWed Dec 16 1992 12:379

    My German grandmother used to make a sort of thick eggy pancake for
    dinner for us kids sometimes -- she called it "schmotta" but I doubt
    that that word is any German dictionary! Anyway, to put on we used
    light Karo syrup, not maple syrup. I suppose that is because the Karo
    approximated something she was used to in Yugoslavia, whereas maple
    syrup was foreign to her.

    Tasted great then...I haven't tried it in years.
3709.11Rice Krispie BarsLOMITA::GOHN"WITH THE WIND"Wed Dec 16 1992 18:0519
                             Rice Krispie Bars

1 C. sugar
1 C. Light Karo Syrup
2 C. peanut butter (personally I like chunky)
7 C. Rice Krispies

Put peanut butter and Rice Krispies in large bowl or pan.

In separate pan, cook sugar and Karo Syrup until sugar dissolves (sugar is
ususally dissolved when you see mixture starting to boil). Pour mixture over
Rice Krispies and peanut butter. Stir quickly and thoroughly. Press mixture
into 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Score into bars. Cool.

Note: For a change I sometime add chocolate chips to the peanut butter/Rice
Krispies (a handful or so depending on how chocolately you want it to be).

Yum!
3709.12Any Karo in the UK?SUBURB::MCDONALDAShockwave RiderFri Jan 28 1994 11:038
    Has anyone in the UK (more specifically round the Reading area) found
    Karo Syrup on sale? My wife's supply has run out.

    She's tried the Deli opposite St Mary's in Reading, but to no avail.
    I'm hoping the new Safeway being built just up the road from Death
    Park will stock it, anyone found it in a British Safeway.

    Remember, if you don't use your Karo syrup, it grows experiments
    like science projects in the back of the fridge!

    I have never had to put Karo syrup in the refrig. I've ALWAYS left it
    in the pantry, and it has kept for years!
