3615.1 | Julio's liquor's in Westboro??? | KOLFAX::WHITMAN | Acid Rain Burns my Bass | Wed Aug 26 1992 14:25 | 17 |
| < Where can I buy poppy seeds ? I work in the Marlboro, MA area and live
< in a own close by also. I have looked at the Star Market, BJs and
< Sudbury Farms but havent been able to find poppy seeds there. Any
< suggestions ?
Julie,
Glad to see you're still around...
One place I found to locate "off-the-wall" stuff, including spices, is
at the liquor store in the shopping plaza at the intersection of Lyman Road and
Rt 9 I think it was a Julio's. It's the place out near Rt 9, not back in the
supermarket...

Is there a Purity nearby? They carry them, as I would think
most major supermarkets do, right in the normal spice section.

3615.3 | not at Star or Stop&Shop | HDLITE::CATINELLA | | Wed Aug 26 1992 16:17 | 7 |
| All the Purity stores near me have closed. Star and Stop&Shop doesnt
carry them. I'll have to try a Shaw's or a Big D also. I was
wondering where the people that are making the poppy seed goodies in
notes 1548 and 2927 were getting them !

| If you want dry poppy seeds for baking, you can get them mail order
from King Arthur Flour in Vermont, I reckon. Or try a health food
store that sells flour and other baking supplies. They probably have
them at A-market in Manchester NH, for one.
Traditional Jewish pastries are made with a poppy seed filling. You
buy this rather wet paste-like filling (called "mohn") in stores that
service large Jewish populations. I suppose you could take a trip to
Newton or Brookline.
Mohn is used to fill either an oblong sweet yeast pastry, glazed with
egg, or triangular yeast or cookie dough cookies served during the
holiday of Purim in February/March.

3615.5 | About as exotic as cheese | ESCROW::ROBERTS | | Thu Aug 27 1992 07:25 | 5 |
| I'm amazed to hear that poppy seeds are hard to find. They used to be
available in *any* super market. Have the marketing mavens decided
that this is an exotic item???

| San Francisco Herb Co sells them in a large bag for less than half of
what King Arthur charges. The address and telephone number for this
herb company has been posted a few times in the past. I may have an
extra catalog of theirs at home - if you are interested in it, send me
mail.
Interesting to note that Purity's near you have closed. They are
remodeling the one in Nashua, NH but we can't seem to figure out why.
Nobody seems to shop there, except people who want to get double
coupons. :^)

go fast.

You might want to try the Middle-East Market on Park Ave. in Worcester.

3615.10 | should not be hard to find | CADSYS::HECTOR::RICHARDSON | | Thu Aug 27 1992 13:24 | 9 |
| If you only need a few, they are usually hidden in the spices rack of
the grocery store, along with cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, whole
cardamon pods, etc. They cost a bundle that way, though. You can buy
them in large plastic bags for the same price in a Chinese or Asian
grocery store. Same deal for sesame seeds. You can also get white
poppy seeds, though I usually just use the black ones even if the
recipe calls for the other kind since I don't usually have any on hand.

Julie,
Send Pete to the Big D in Hudson some day after work. They have poppy
seeds in plastic cartons in the ethnic foods aisle for a reasonable
price.
