3573.0. "Feds bust Shrimp Proccesor in Ayer MA" by FSOA::BERICSON (MRO1-1/L87 DTN 297-3200) Mon Jul 20 1992 15:48

The shrip supplier in Ayer MA (I forgot the name) just got raided for
adding sacchrine to the shrimp... I hear it retains water. I always
liked their shrimp and thought I was getting a good deal.

The feds seized millions of dollars worth of the shrimp.

1 Are they still in business?

2 Anyone else know anything about additives like this?

3573.1New England Shrimp is in "hot water"MICROW::CAHILLJim CahillTue Jul 21 1992 12:2125
The name of the company is New England Shrimp Company. They're one of the
suppliers to Legal Seafoods, among others. $2.5 million worth of shrimp
was "siezed" by the FDA. Actually, the stuff is still sitting in Ayer; New
England Shrimp has just agreed not to ship it until this thing is resolved.
As far as I knowm, they *are* still in business.

Sacchrine doesn't retain water. Supposedly, they were adding another safe,
FDA-approved chemical which "bulks up" the shrimp (by retaining water). The
FDA believes the sacchrine was being added to hide the taste of this other
additive, the name of which I forget. The FDA has approved sacchrine for use
as a dietary sugar substitute, but they apparently objected to it being added
to the shrimp without the shrimp being labeled as containing sacchrine.

The company was also charged with not labeling imported shrimp correctly.

There was a big write-up about all this in the local papers. The company's
response was basically that they're cooperating fully with the investigation,
and that they've always had a resident FDA inspector present (makes me wonder
where he or she was when they were "sugar coating" their shrimp!).

I'm sure we haven't heard the end of this story.

P.S. Their shrimp does taste great..... now I know why! :-)
