    Hi!!

Just wondering if anyone out there knows how bread and butter
pickles got their name? And while we are talking about them,
    does anyone have a recipe?

    Thanks,

    Linda

Bread and Butter pickles are so called because they taste so nice with
just plain bread and butter (we grew up on bread and butter pickle
sandwiches) - it is that simple!

My grandmother has a recipe for bread and butter pickles that you
make in the freezer. I think she just calls them freezer pickles.

If you would like, I will bring the recipe in for you.

Pickles are easy and fun to make. If you pick the cukes yourself, or
buy them from a farm stand where they haven't been washed, they'll be
covered in little spiny hairs. You can wash the whole batch in the
washing machine (no soap, of course, in cold water on "gentle.")
The spines will rub off and the cukes will be clean. Just remember to
take the cukes out before the spin cycle or you'll end up with relish.

Last New Year's Eve, we were in Vermont, and one of the folks in our
party picked up some B&B pickles that were made with maple sugar/syrup
instead of regular sugar as the sweetener. At first, it sounded gross.
One taste remedied that situation. They were delicious! I guess when
you come right down to it, maple syrup & pickles does not sound any
worse than white sugar & pickles. I'll be trying to reproduce the
    recipe later this year.

Thanks for hitting my funny bone.

Now - suppose we pull out the cucumbers before the spin cycle. Then we
put them in the dryer! On high! Then what?!

Flatten them out with the truck, then hang 'em on the line! Now THAT's
a solution to the annual zucchini troubles!

My grandmother used to make pickles out of cucumbers and sliced onions,
put them in the fridge overnight with some vinegar and sugar. But I
dont have any exact measurements. Anyone have a recipe for these kind
of pickles? I dont even know what they're called.
    thanks
