3430.0. "Mirin - anyone know what it is ?" by OCTAVE::VIGNEAULT () Wed Jan 22 1992 11:54

    I have a recipe for Chicken Yakitori which calls for an ingredient
    called Mirin. I suspect it's a Japanese wine or liqueur though I'm
    not certain.

    Anyone know what Mirin is and where I can obtain it in Central
    Mass ?

    Thanks, Larry

3430.1try an oriental grocerCADSYS::HECTOR::RICHARDSONWed Jan 22 1992 11:582
    It's a sort of sweet rice wine. You might find it in an oriental
    grocery store or even a liquor store.

    Thanks, I suspected it was some sort of liquor, however the 2 liquor
    stores I've been to both said they've never heard of it. They even
    looked it up in their catalogs to no avail.

    At least knowing definitively what I'm looking for will help.

It's more along the lines of a cooking wine. Last time I looked, Joyce Chen's
in Acton carried it.

    Thanks for all your help, I managed to locate it in Cho's Oriental
    Market in Worcester.

    Mirin is actually spiced sake; it is traditionally drunk cool (as
    opposed to hot) at New Year's. I don't know what spices go into it,
    but I imagine you could "mull" sake in a pinch.

3430.7It's on Cambridge Street ..OCTAVE::VIGNEAULTThu Jan 23 1992 15:3114

    Hi Edd,

     If you head up Cambridge Street towards Webster Square, there's a
    small strip mall on your left before the complex of brick buildings
    where Reed and Prince used to be. It's actually called Twins Oriental
    market now. It's shortly past the point where Cambridge St goes up
    a short hill over a railroad track, then curves slightly to the left.

    Hope this helps,
    Larry

    I hope they carry panang curry, fish sauce and coconut milk...

    If not, there are a couple places on Main Street near Clark University
    that do.

    Two outta three wasn't bad. I scored a big bottle of "nouk mom" fish
    sauce and a couple cans of coconut milk. They had a variety of curries
    but nothing explicitly stating "panang".

    T'was worth the trip though. I've been buying "A Taste Of Thai" fish
    sauce for about $2.79 for ~ .5 pint. The bottle I bought Saturday cost
    $1.99 and is at least a quart. It's the same stuff Jeff Smith uses....
