3423.0. "Chocolate without caffeine?" by DSTEG::BLANCHARD () Fri Jan 17 1992 12:39

    Question: Is it possible to get chocolate without caffeine in it? My
    son is allergic to caffeine and he goes from a wonderful eight-year old
    to a complete nervous wreck with even small amounts of chocolate, for
    example a chocolate-chip cookie, and of course he loves chocolate.

    I suspect that all too often sugar gets blamed on children being
    hyper-active or out-of-control, but my experience has been excessive
    caffeine.

    Of course the coke based drinks have the same problem, but there is a
    choice of no caffeine on those products. If I could find chocolate
    without caffeine, I could use it in cooking and satisfy the craving.

    Thanks

    I'm not sure so probably should keep quiet but isn't white chocolate
    without caffeine?

    There is a chocolate notes file on OHMARY::CHOCOLATE. Note 180
    discusses caffeine (in white chocolate) but quickly degrades into
    vices. Well, perhaps "degrade" is not the proper word to use. :^)

    What would happen if you made your son chocolate chip cookies with 1/4
    the amount of chips and replace the other 3/4 with something like
    peanut butter morsels or nuts? The poor kid....

    How about carob?
3423.4yes, try carobENABLE::glantzMike @TAY 227-4299 TP Eng LittletonFri Jan 17 1992 15:474
I agree with .-1: carob is probably is a good idea, for a whole bunch
of reasons. I've seen carob chips which can be used directly in place
of chocolate chips. They actually taste pretty decent, too.

    carob would have been my suggestion too, but you'd have to
    try it out - some people think it is no where NEAR the flavour
    of chocolate, others don't mind at all.

    Thanks for the suggestions. I checked with Sanborn Candies in Plaistow
    NH ( a wonderland of chocolate I might add ), and they told me that
    White chocolate has less Caffeine, but it still does have some. I will
    check the carob and see how things work out. He loves chocolate so.
    He is really good for someone that age, he will pass it up, but it
    must be a real sacrifice for him.

    Thanks again, and I will check the Chocolate notes...

3423.7Carob worked great.DSTEG::BLANCHARDThu Jan 23 1992 12:4514
    We made some Carob chip cookies and my son was tickled pink with them.
    The do resemble chocolate enough that he is satisfied. I think I will
    pick up some of the carob powder and see how that does with milkshakes
    etc.

    Thanks for the advice, the local health food store in Plaistow, NH had
    an assortment of Carob to choose from. You folks made on kid very
    happy, as well as the parents. You cannot begin to imagine the effect
    chocolate has on him.

    Thanks again

Wow, it's really good to hear that he can enjoy himself a little.
Thanks for the good news.

Meanwhile, while discussing this problem with some friends, they
suggested that a way to get something approaching a dark chocolate
flavor with carob might be to add some decaffeinated coffee (probably a
powdered instant) to a recipe. I suppose it would have to be fully
decaffeinated to work (no idea if this exists), and I have no idea how
it would taste.
