| Isn't a shopping list something a person needs according to what that
person likes to cook or know what to cook?
Maybe I am missimg something, I always make a shopping list BEFORE I
go out shopping to make sure I don't forget any ingredient of what I
plan to cook for the week or it is in season.
If you compile the lists... what will be the end product and results?
please take no offense, I just don't know what I could do with it or
how often could I use it. More info on your plans will be welcome.
Regards, Ana

| Years ago I made a checklist of everything I normally buy. I just went
through my cupboards and closets and listed everything that was there.
I would use this as I, again, went through the house making a weekly
shopping list. One was strictly for reference; the other was the
missing or dwindling items. Each person's check list would be very
different. I don't do this anymore, however.

3086.5 | real simple method | CADSYS::HECTOR::RICHARDSON | | Tue Jun 18 1991 13:40 | 26 |
| I keep a pad of paper hanging on the front of the refrigerator. Anyone
who uses up the last of something gets to write it down on the
appropriate section of the list, which we organize based on where the
closest grocery store puts the various types of items. When I do the
menu for the week, I take that list and add the menu on the right side
of the page, with notes as to when to start thawing out various items
and do other preliminary preparations (poached chicken last night for
chicken enchiladas tonight; thawed sauce made earlier also). The
current page is held onto the refrigerator with a clip magnet, where we
stick coupons for items to be purchased each week. We try to keep an
extra package of most non-perishable items around, so that we don't end
up making emergency grocery runs because we are out of something dumb
like toilet paper or laundry detergent (milk is a different story).
I never found big checkoff lists to be very useful - contains space for
oodles of items that our family never uses, and is always missing
something we do need.
Remember back when we were kids some TV personality was selling a book
on an elaborate mnemonic scheme so that you wouldn't have to write down
your grocery list?? Instead, you devised this complex mental image
containing items that rhymed with or otherwise reminded you of things
you needed to buy. It was a real riot! Especially if your grocery
list exceeds 10-15 items.

| re - .5
In addition to organizing a shopping list according to store layout, I
have found it helpful to sort out coupons I will use and put them in
similar order ahead of time. By moving those coupons to the front of
my coupon pouch, I can cruise the store in no time! These efforts are
especially helpful if you are doing a "major" shopping trip.
|
3086.8 | | EVETPU::RUST | | Fri Jun 28 1991 16:45 | 22 |
| Yeah, but just when I'd gotten my list in the right order, the durned
store went and reorganized itself; made me so wild I tore the map up,
and now I just read the signs. [Favorite sign in Purity Supreme:
"Nutritious Foods". They're only in one aisle, so the whole rest of the
store - including the produce section - must contain products fabricated
from sawdust.]
Also, if you're really into bargain-hunting, you'll probably patronize
at least a couple of different stores; do you keep a separate list for
each? And what about when things are on special in those
bins-at-the-end-of-the-aisle, never bearing any relationship to the
product's usual spot on the shelves - that would put your coupons
completely out of synch. ;-)
Sounds like a job for a laptop-computer application. "<beep> You are
now passing the facial-tissue section... Do not purchase here...
Your preferred brand, <click> Nose-soft <click>, is on sale at
<click> The-Other-Place <click>..."
(I think I'll go out back quietly and pick some peas, now...)

3086.11 | Speed tips | TNPUBS::STEINHART | Pixillated | Mon Jul 01 1991 17:28 | 46 |
| As a person who HATES grocery shopping, I've developed a system that
saves time, both while making lists at home, and while in the store.
These are the things I've found that work:
1. There is an envelope (saved from junk mail) on the refigrerator
door. As we use things up, we add them to the list on the envelope.
I put the following headers on the envelope:
PRODUCE MISC. FOOD (including frozen)
MEAT NON-FOOD
DAIRY
DELI
This roughly corresponds to the organization in the supermarket.
2. I use the inside of the envelope for coupons. Items for which I plan
to use coupons have a bullet next to them on the list. I put the
brandname on the list, so I don't have to check the coupon while
shopping.
3. I got one of those $3.99 coupon organizers by mail. It's highly
worthwhile. I only use a few, big categories.
3. I have lists of staple items taped inside my cabinet doors,
including one list for refrigerated staples. Before doing a major shop
(about once a week), I review these lists to see what's missing. Most
items are already on the envelope, but this helps me catch stuff I
miss. May sound silly, but it really saves a LOT of time.
I only need to add items needed for particular recipes I plan to
make, such as cuts of meat or fish, and special vegetables or fruit.
4. For items we use quickly, I keep one or two backups, such as
chicken broth.
5. I buy papergoods and cleaning products in bulk at a wholesale
warehouse store, either BJ's or Pace. Then I'm not hauling in toilet
paper every week. Saves time and effort, as well as cash. I also buy
imported Italian spaghetti and elbows there, in big bags.
6. Delegate -:) Hubby will do the foodshop without much complaint, if
given a very detailed list, which all the above steps will produce.
Now, if I could just combine the best features of each store in one. .

| re .10
I guess I really don't understand this whole topic. I mean, the list
in .10 has a zillion items on it. Obviously, you don't buy everything
on the list every time you go to the store. Do you have lots of copies
of it, and just check off what you need for each trip? If so, then
this is just like making a list of just what you need eash time on a
piece of scrap paper, right?
Or are we looking for a list of everything you might ever buy at the
supermarket?

| I do the shoppign in our household, and I leave the list in my pocket, pick
what I think we need off the shelves, and then check the list at the end to
see what I have missed and do a qquick pass back through the store to find it.
I very rarely have missed more than 2-3 items. (Of course, I usually buy
several things that my wife hasn't put on the list, but that's part of the
fun....)

I live in southern N.H. and shop at Shaw's. They have grocery check
list available at the service counter. The check lists goods in the
order they can be found in the store. We stick one to the front of the
frig each week and mark off what we need. I always shop at 7:00am on
Sundays (no crowds in the store!) and only need to make one pass to
complete my shopping.

Living in Chelmsford has its advantages. Liquor stores
are open on Sunday. The tide creeps slowly downward.
