3075.0. ""Red" Bananas" by PSYLO::WILSON () Mon Jun 10 1991 08:57

    I bought some red bananas.

    How can you tell when they're ripe and ready to eat?!

    Hi Wes,

    Sounds like Plantains to me. They are very popular in
    Latin countries. I know there are recipes in here that
    call for them. I have never eaten them raw, but grilled
    (whole) or cooked (sauteed) with cinnamon, they are delicious.

3075.2Red bananas are not plantainsTONTO::ARDENBush, just say NO!!Fri Jun 14 1991 12:1011
There are indeed red bananas and plantains, but they are different. Red
bananas are similar to yellow bananas except smaller and sweeter, at least
the ones I've had. I usually squeeze them and if they're soft, I figure
that they are ripe.

Plantains are similar looking to yellow bananas (or sometimes red or
black), but have a thicker skin and are somewhat longer. They are used as
a vegetable. They need to be boiled, fried, grilled, etc. I treat them as
a potato, which is a common usage in Carribean cooking.

    We fry them.

    Take off the skin, cut lengthwise, roll in bread crumbs, saute in a
    little oil and hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm they are good!

    My husband is from Brazil and they eat fried bananas all the time!
