2948.0. "BOOK: Greek Cookbooks" by CSSE::MANDERSON () Fri Mar 08 1991 12:53

I have a large collection of cookbooks and now I am looking for an
    authentic Greek cookbook.

I have some books that have Greek dishes included in them but I am
looking for a book that has recipes, ideas, history etc. that comes
    excclusively from Greece.

Can anyone suggest one for me?

    Thanks

    Marilyn

Hi. I already have one of Jeff Smith's books and I am planning on
buying the new one where I know there will be some good recipes.

However, I would like an authentic Greek cookbook. I have an Italian
one that not only has wonderful recipes but has color photographs
and breaks the recipes down by region. The recipes are also given in
Metric - as well as American. Originally written in Italian - adapted
by an American writer and VERY authentic.

This is the _kind_ of book I am looking for the country of Greece.

    Thanks,

    Marilyn

P.S. The purpose behind this is that I want to know more about Greece,
their culture and classic dishes. It is for my interest as well as
I am going to prepare an Easter dinner this year - that will be
          completely Greek (sp?)!

          Any ideas?

I hope you like tripe. My Yiya always had what we kids called
'gut soup'. That's the one course I usually change.

Never had it (tripe)...but a friend of mine - who is Italian - LOVES
it. I should have her prepare some and see if I like it.

For soup - was thinking of a Lemon Egg Drop - isn't that Greek?

Suggest you check the telephone number of the Greek Orthodox
church in or near your community -
Ask if they have a church cookbook available - each recipe is signed so -
You can be assured they are authentic and super!!

I am continually in shock at the NON-authentic recipes in books. . .

I am presently compiling a cookbook with my Family's recipes
    (Not for Sale!!)
but if you wish any particular recipe, don't hesitate to contact me.
Esmail::Johnson or DTN 249-4089. Do not delay, I'll be leaving soon!!

A quick note to a fellow employee yielded the following response:

Yes, I can recommend one - any Greek worth his/her alati (salt) has a copy.
The book is called 'Greek Cooking For All Seasons' and is published by the
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell. We bought our copy at
Princes Bookstore in Lowell but I recall hearing recently that that bookstore
was going out of business; I don't know if it has or not.

At any rate, you could try calling or mailing to the following address, which
is in the back of the cookbook:

	Ladies' Philoptochos Society "Pantanassa"
	Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church
	Lewis Street
	Lowell, Ma. 01854

	Telephone: (508) 458-8092

You might also try calling Princes Bookstore at (508) 452-8114. This phone
number is actually for Princes Office Supply which is next door to the
bookstore but the phone directory doesn't list a number for the bookstore (maybe
because it is out of business).

  Hope this helps,

Doesn't the Frugal Gourmet have a new mediterranean cookbook out? Would this
serve your purpose? Next suggestion would be to look thru the latest Jessica's
Biscuit catalog.
2948.8Tselementes is the oneHPSTEK::DHAGGISTue Mar 12 1991 12:028
I called up Delphi Gift Shop in Boston (phone 617 426 2111) and they
have the most popular in Greece cook book in stock. The name of the
    book is Tselementes.
This should do it. I have never had one, so I can not tell if besides
recipes it has the history behind the recipe. But I have heard the name
Tselemendes as being the bible for the cook.
He has it both in Greek and English.

2948.9A cookbook from GreeceCECV05::OLSONJoanna Olson @BUO 249-4012Fri Mar 15 1991 13:3215
This probably won't help much in preparing for Easter, but I'd like to
recommend a cookbook that my daughter brought me from her stay in
Athens in the summer of 1989. The book is "The Best Traditional
Recipes of Greek Cooking", and is published by:

		Editions Dimitri Haitalis
		30, Chrissalidos Str.
		14343 Athens
		Tel. 2523.511 - 7244.851

The book doesn't say much about Greek culture, so if that's what you
really want, it won't suit you. However, over the course of 190 pages,
there are lots of recipes for appetizers, soups, salads, main-dish
pies, eggs, pasta/rice dishes, sauces, meats, poultry, game meats,
    fish, vegetables, and desserts.
