I am looking for some ideas for some neat treats for my daughter's seventh birthday party. I don't want anything too messy because we will be at a roller skating rink. If any of you have some out of the ordinary ideas for treats, could you share them with me. Thanks, Cel

How about cupcakes made in ice cream cones? No paper to throw away, kids love them. I aways used the marshmellow type frosting then add sprinkles for decoration.

Put together a "party hat bag" for each child. Take those cone shaped paper party hats, and fill them up with penny candy, (wrapped stuff like bullseyes, hotballs, sixlets,) sticks of sugarfree gum, some of those goofy little toys available from a toystore (I used to love the little superballs, the jacks and the mini cans of playdoh, but maybe they would be a little dangerous for a skating rink! :-)), Stickers, barrettes, hairribbons, (you said girls, right?) makeup for kids, etc., and then close the end with a colorful piece of cellophane (sp?) or tissue paper and a rubber band. When treats are gone, they can wear the hat! As long as you make it clear that there is no skating while eating or having candy in mouth, they should enjoy the treats. L-

You may also be able to find things in party stores or toy stores that fit with you skating party theme. I have seen skating pencils, sticker and pencils in some of these stores. To prevent any accidents or loss of favors you may want to save them for the end of the party. As another source for Birthday Party Favors you may want to look in the Parenting Notesfile. This seems to be a topic that comes up often. Kathy

Another popular item with children is miniature turkeys wrapped in brioche. I'd give that some serious thought. Diane

from an old roller skater: the idea of giving children bags of food OR toys before they finish skating brings to mind visions of disaster. food dropped on the floor of the rink is a disaster for skaters that run through it - can cause accidents and/or gum up skates...and toys act as minature brakes when dropped in front of a skater - you've never seen a stop as sudden as running into a toy can cause. I had a broken tail bone due to just this event. May I suggest you save the goodies for a "Thank you for coming" gift and hand them out as the Children LEAVE the party? I'm sure the rink has an area for snacks and drinks where you can offer traditional party nibbles of cupcakes and punch - while everyone is seated AND BEFORE THEY PUT ON THEIR SKATES.... but I really wouldn't give them anything to KEEP before skating starts.

Just to put some of your minds at ease. I never give out goodie bags until the children are at my door ready to leave. This allows them to keep all the goodies for themselves when they get home and I'm not cleaning up sticky messes. As far as the roller skating rink goes, I would not let the children chew anything while skating. I frequent this particular roller rink often with my daughter and they have strick rules that they enforce. Thanks so far for all your responses! Cel |
