Uncle Ben's has a new product described as having a "popcorn"
aroma; I forget the actual name, but it should be easy to find on
the shelf.
I think all "popcorn" rices are variations of Basmati rice, a
tasty, aromatic Indian variety. Texmati, a cross between long
grain and Basmati is found in the gourmet section of many markets.

| If you buy Basimati rice at a regular supermarket you are going to be paying
around $3.50 per pound. I purchase Basimati in Denver for about $.90 per
pound by buying in bulk. Call around to some Oriental Stores and some Health
food stores to find a good price.

| I have been told that the only way to buy Basmati rice is in Indian
grocery stores. Expect to pay over a $1/pound for the better varieties
of Basmati in those stores.
The supermarket packages are badly overpriced for what you get - or so
I was told by an Iranian food expert.

| Popcorn rice may have been bred from basmati rice, but they are NOT the same
thing. Popcorn rice was bred in Lousiana and still is most commonly obtained
there. Both Community Kitchens and K-Paul's (both located in Louisiana)
sell it by mail order.

I believe that it's under the label "Aromatica". It's in the same basic
orange box, but there is more yellow on it than the 'standard' flavor (is
it U.B. that's in the orange box??)
I've tried it and found that *I* preferred other types of rice than the
aromatica... (vote seconded as well by my husband who's a bit more into
rice than I am)

2660.6 | Found basmati/popcorn rice | ODIXIE::WATSONPH | | Thu Oct 11 1990 17:40 | 7 |
| I found the Basmati (popcorn) rice in the local specialty food store.
On the outside of the bag in says 'Basmati Rice' and underneath in
small letters 'Popcorn Rice', so I guess this is as close as I can come
to the original Louisiana popcorn rice. I'll make some this weekend and
let you know how it tastes.

| BAsimati or Texamati Rice tasts wonderful. This is rice with a flavor this is
the rice of the gods. It is all I ever cook with now. If you cannot find
basimati anywhere then go to an oriectal store and ask for Flavored Rice this
stuff is close to basimati.

| I buy basmati rice from the health food store...from the bulk bins.
I think it was between .99-1.29/lb. It is so fragrant...the aroma
fills the house...yum.

| I'd like to cast my vote for Texmati also! That stuff is GREAT!!!
For those of you in Mass., Worcester County... if you ever go to
Spag's... they occasionally carry it as one of their items along the
back wall, and it's very reasonable.

2660.10 | not cheap though | SALEM::SILVERIA | | Tue Jan 15 1991 15:35 | 11 |
| My mother was a native of New Orleans. Her family sent me up (NH)
some Community Kitchen brand popcorn rice. It was heavenly! I made
some chicken andouille gumbo just for the occasion.
I agree with .4, it is NOT the same thing. The taste is noticably
different than balsmati rice.
My sister in S. California has also found the same brand there in a
specialty store.

| I have recently tried Basmati rice and I have found its taste a bit
too overpower for me. (I had it just plain with butter). I have seen
the Texamati rice in the store. Does it taste the same as Basamati?
I guess my real question is if I don't like Basmati will I also not
like Texamati.

I _love_ Basmati rice. I used to go to Middle Eastern restaurants
all the time just for their great rice, until one day I realized it
was basmati rice they use. The aroma and the taste are wonderful.
I just tried Taxamati rice for the first time last week. It was
a lot cheaper than the basmati I normally get in the tiny little
box, so I thought I'd try it. It was great, just like regular
basmati, same aroma and flavor.
So if you don't like basmati, you won't like Taxamati I suppose.
But I'm having a hard time visualizing someone not liking
Basmati... :-)

like not liking chocolate!

| Erik, if you want real Basmati and don't want to pay a fortune for it,
get it in bulk at an Indian grocery. Still more expensive than regular
American long-grain but affordable. I use little else these days...

I'll have to remember to think basmati next time I'm in Waltham
(the only Indian store I know). I should have thought of it, they
have a lot of otherwise-expensive spices and nuts at not-so-bad
bulk prices. Thanks...

| Erik, there's also an Indian grocery in Nashua, if you ever come up to
ZK. There's also one in Somerville very near my house; if you and I
ever cross paths again :-) and we know it ahead of time, I can pick you
up some.

| The Indian grocery in Nashua, NH is called East/West Foods. It's located in
the Lamplighter Square shopping plaza, on the southbound side of the Daniel
Webster Highway in south Nashua, right around the entrance to the Pheasant Lane
Mall. You can only get into the plaza heading southbound on the DW Highway.

This isn't entirely true. If you are northbound on the DW highway take a
left turn at the light just past Lamplighter Square (which is just past
the light at Costco/Uno's) and just before Southgate Plaza (Stuarts/Market
Basket). I believe this street is Danforth. Go up the hill and before
you get to the Sanders gate, the back entrance to Lamplighter Square will
be on your left.
