2408.0. "Kiwani - aka Horned Melon" by OCTAVE::VIGNEAULT (We're all bozos on this Q-bus) Mon May 07 1990 13:06

During my lunchtime excursion to the local supermarket today, I picked
a small melon called a Kiwani, aka a Horned Melon. These come from New
Zealand, and are yellowish in color, and about 4-5 inches long by 2-3
inches in diameter. They're covered with sharp pyramid like horns,
hence the name Horned Melon. I've never had one of these before, and I
was wondering if any of you have tried them. If so, does anyone have
any hints as to preparation etc .. Right now,I'm anticipating that
I'll simply cut it open and eat the insides with a spoon.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

We bought one a few weeks ago. It is filled with green flesh which is replete
with seeds. I was underwhelmed. Perhaps someone has experience in preparing
these unusual fruit?

Wow, you got that right. I couldn't figure out what to do with the
darn thing. It wasn't very tasty either. The best I could do would
be to compare it to a pomegranate, excepting I like pomegranates a
lot more. My wife and I each tried a taste, and then into the trash
it went - I really hate to waste stuff too. So, perhaps this
melon-granate has some sort of culinary function, but at this time,
I have no idea what that may be. Save your money and opt for the
strawberries or pineapples or whatever. This is just my opinion of
course, and somebody may come along and shed some light on these beasts
and it may all of a sudden make sense.

For recipes or what to do with "that thing", try any of the loca
Super Stop and Shops produce section. Next to the strange fruits
are cards that tell the shopper what the fruit is, where it came
from and some ways of serving it.
