2324.0. "altering a recipe" by GNUVAX::QUIRIY (A possum in her time...) Fri Mar 23 1990 20:06

I didn't see a good place to put this, but I only looked through the
    first 200 notes.

I'm not good at altering recipes, but I want to make a peanut-butter
oatmeal cookie and I only have recipes for plain oatmeal cookies.
Can I just add (1/2 cup? 1 cup?) peanut butter to the oatmeal cookie
recipe and not adjust any of the other ingredients? Or, should I
increase the flour a bit? And the liquid too? I'd also like the
cookies to be cake-y or soft.

Are there any guidelines or rules of thumb for decreasing or increasing
    <this> when adding <that>?

If you need a recipe, I can type one in (probably just the one off the
    oatmeal box)...

    Thanks,

    Christine

    Here's a recipe I have for Peanut-Oatmeal Drops.

    3/4 c. shortening
    1/2 c. peanut butter
    3/4 c. packed brown sugar
    1/2 c. sugar
    3 eggs
    1/4 c. milk
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 1/2 c. flour
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 c. quick-cooking rolled oats
    1 c. chopped peanuts

Cream together shortening, peanut butter and sugars, till light and
fluffy; add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Blend in milk
and vanilla. Thoroughly stir together flour, soda and salt; stir into
creamed mixture. Stir in oats and peanuts. Drop from teaspoon 2" apart
on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 6
    dozen.

Sounds great, thanks. I'll try next time around. I used the recipe on
the back of the Quaker oatmeal box and added 1/2 cup peanut butter --
the cookies came out dry but good tasting. Your recipe calls for more
egg than the Quaker, that's the only difference I can spot by memory
    alone.
