2224.0. "Monkey Bread" by BSS::BLAZEK (only room for one in your cage) Sat Jan 27 1990 20:34

I didn't see a Bread topic this would really fit under, so this topic
is for breads that can be served for breakfast when you want something
a bit fancier than banana bread or toast with jam.

Monkey Bread
------------

4 cans ready to bake biscuits, 10 to a can
1-1/2 cups sugar
1-1/2 sticks butter
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Cut unbaked biscuits into fourths. In a paper sack, mix 1/2 cup sugar
and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Shake pieces in sack a few at a time. Place
in a well-greased bundt pan.

Mix 1 cup sugar, butter, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon in a sauce pan. Bring
to a boil and pour over biscuits. Bake at 350F for 35 minutes.

Very rich and fattening, but well worth walking for.

I thought I saw a request for homemade Monkey Bread but, can't recall
where. I have this recipe..I have never tried it.

    2/3 cup sugar
    2/3 cup crisco
    1 cup milk
    1 1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup mashed potatoes
    1 pkg. yeast
    2 eggs slightly beaten
    flour
    3 sticks butter or margarine

Combine first 4 ingredients in large saucepan. Heat until shortening
    melts. Remove from heat. Add next 3 ingredients and 1/2 cup warm water;
mix well. Add 6 cups flour; blend thoroughly. Place in greased bowl.
Turn to grease surface. Let rise until doubled in bulk. Punch down.
divide in half. Knead each half several times on floured surface. Roll
out to 1/4-inch thick. Cut into 1x4-inch stripes. Melt 1 stick butter
    marg. in cake pan. Dip 1 strip dough in butter. Coil around finger;
place in center of pan. Dip next strip in butter; coil around first
rolled strip. Repeat coils continuously until pan is filled. Let rise
until doubled in bulk. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown. May be
sprinled with sugar and cinnamon before coiling. Yield:3 loaves.

Hi,

For the non-Americans, could you please explain what "Crisco" is, and
how much is in a "stick" of butter?

This recipe looks really good: I'll make it as soon as I understand it!

Thanks,
Sheridan

Crisco is the brand name of a popular vegetable shortening.

A stick of butter is eight tablespoons, or 1/4 pound.

Good luck. I also have a nice recipe for a Herb Monkey Bread that I'll
enter here as soon as I've brought it in from home.

crisco is a solid vegetable shortening. We buy it in a can. I use it in
pie crust also. Before we had crisco our grandmothers used lard.

I'll try it this weekend - hungry sort-of step-children around so ...

Will let you know what they think!
