What is Vegemite made from? How is it used? Does it have a flavor comparable to any common American food? "Dir/tit=veg" yielded nothing. Pointer(s) would be appreciated. Thanks. --Mike (Cross-posted in ANYWAY::ASKENET)

Vegemite ..... is part of 'Australian culture', most of our children are raised on toast & vegemite or vegemite sandwiches. To us it is like 'peanut butter & jelly' is to Americans. We even have a saying "we happy little vegemites" But what is it .... it is this black/brown salty spread (sort-of-like axle grease !). It is a yeast spread made from vegetables very rich in the 'B' vitamins. Other similar substances/spreads .... PROMITE, MARMITE It has all sorts of uses other than a spead, I use it instead of stock cubes in casseroles and stews. Toodles Suzanne | |||||

It's made mainly from the yeast residue left over after brewing beer and ale. The various brands of vegemite and their variations all taste somewhat different and have their adherents amongst connoisseurs. I have some English friends who love British marmite but won't go near Canadian marmite or Australian vegemite. I know Australians who feel the same way about the British product. Canadian marmite is pretty widely available in New England in gourmet and specialty shops. The Australian stuff was all over the place in the U.S. right after that pop hit "Men Down Under" that mentioned "vegemite sandwich" hit the charts, but it seems to have disappeared again. --PSW |
