I found a recipe for apple chutney that I want to try, but it calls for something called fenugreek. I assume that this is a spice since it only calls for one teaspoon. So, I'll bite - does anyone know what that is, or better yet, where to get it? Is there a substitute? Speaking of spices, can anyone recommend a grocery store that has a wide selection of spices in the Nashua area? I went to Purity, Alexanders and Shaws looking for fenugreek and a couple other spices. I couldn't find fenugreek anywhere. I was also looking for white and black mustard seeds. Some had the yellow ones, but no one had black mustard seeds. So, does anyone know of a good store around here that has a nice wide selection of spices? And what the heck is fenugreek? Thanks for any help... Cathryn

Yes, fenugreek is a spice. I used it when I made some indian spice blends. I bought it at a now defunct health food store that had bulk spices. I'd bet that you could get it at the East West Grocer (or whatever it is called) in Lamplighter Square. They have spices and other goodies that I can't find anywhere else. I'm pretty sure they have the mustard seeds. I'm looking for a store in the Lowell/Nashua area that has a good selection of bulk spices. I found a good place in Newburyport, but I don't get there often enough. Patti | |||||

Fenugreek *is* a spice, but is also an herb (ie the plant that grows from the seeds). East/West Grocery always has the spice, usually has the dried herb, and very occasionally has the fresh herb. They all go under the name methi (or methe), pronounced 'metty'. The seeds are *VERY* hard so if the recipe doesn't call for 'ground' fenugreek, it may be the herb that's needed. E/W G also does have the mustard seeds, I bought some there last week, but they're not labelled and look somewhat similar to 'kalonji' (wild black onion seeds) so you might have to ask to be sure of getting the right thing.
