1947.0. "Playdough" by BTOVT::GEORGE_L (Thirty something...) Fri Aug 18 1989 16:46

Does anyone have a recipe for homemade "Playdough". I know that
it consists of flour, water, salt and food coloring, but I don't
know the exact amounts or how long to cook it. I might be missing
    an ingredient or two also.

    Thanks in advance

    6 cups flour
    3 cups salt
    6 cups	water
    12 tsp	cream of tartar
    12 tbsp	oil
-----	food coloring( as desired for intensity of color)

Mix all ingredients and cook over medium heat until thick and
lumpy. When it begins to form, knead until it cools. Store in covered
    container. Makes about 1/2 gallon.

    Hi,

Just want to ask, are we using table salt or canning/pickling salt? My
daughter will be thrilled to have 1/2 gallons worth of playdough.....

    Thanks.

Yes, just use ordinary iodized table salt. A 1/2 gallon of
playdough seems like alot, but if you keep it covered( we use
plastic half gallon sherbert container) it will last almost forever.
Believe me, kids never think a half gallon of playdough is enough.

Well over the long weekend I was up at my cottage and I had about
10 guests. Four of these guests were some cousins ranging from 4 years
old to 10 years old. I decided that I would show them how to make
palydough. I told the kids that we were making "No rules" playdough,
they could decided color, take care of cleanup, etc. They loved it !
We discovered that a full bottle of red, yellow, green, and blue food
coloring made a dark green playdough. But not only did the kids enjoy
the playdough so did the adults. Thanks for adding this recipe. I told
the kids next time they visit we would make another color.

Here are a couple of recipes thats great for little ones. I used
to let mine use this finger paint outside to paint themselves.
When they got tired I hosed them off. They loved it.

    FINGER PAINT
    1 heaping tbsp. cornstarch
    2 tbsp. cold water
    1 cup boiling water

Dissolve the cornstarch in cold water. Stir to a paste add more
cornstarch if needed (to make a paste). Stir in 1 cup boiling
water. Allow to cool and thicken. Add food coloring or a dab of
    non-toxic paint for color.

    SOAP CRAYONS

    1/4 cup water
    1/2 cup Ivory soap powder
    20-30 drops food coloring

Mix well and put into ice trays. Let dry 2-3 days and color away.

I'll check into my books and see what else I can come up with.
    Have lots of fun.

1947.7Another Play Dough recipeVISUAL::WHITCOMBMon Dec 18 1989 16:4525
    I recently found this "recipe" for Play Dough in a Christmas cookbook;
it seems to be a smaller version of the one posted in .1. Enjoy!

    PLAY DOUGH
    ----------

    1 cup flour
    1/2 cup salt
    2 tsp. cream of tartar
    1 cup water
    1 TBS oil
    food coloring

    1. Combine all ingredients in saucepan. Stirring contantly, cook over
low to medium heat about 3 minutes until a dough is formed. Cool.

    2. Can be used immediately though warm. Keeps well in plastic bags
        or covered container.

Note: You may leave out coloring in Step 1, adding different colors
to small portions of dough once it is cooked. Be sure coloring
is well mixed in before handling it. Food coloring stains.
